Moana 2 Is Still Breaking Box Office Records in Second Weekend

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who’s seen more films than I care to count, I must say that Disney’s Moana 2 has certainly left me spellbound! The way this sequel is breaking box office records and captivating audiences worldwide is nothing short of magical.

Disney’s sequel film, “Moana 2“, is breaking records at the box office. It is predicted to earn between $50-55 million in domestic sales during its second weekend, which would make it a new record for the weekend following Thanksgiving, surpassing the $35.1 million earned by “Frozen II” in 2019. Globally, “Moana 2” is on track to exceed the $600 million mark, coming very close to matching the worldwide total of its 2016 precursor. The initial “Moana“, during its cinematic run, amassed a total of $643.3 million.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to report that according to The Hollywood Reporter, the fall’s blockbusters, namely “Wicked” and the anticipated sequel “Gladiator II,” are still raking in impressive numbers at the box office. Expectedly, “Wicked” is projected to rake in an estimated $32.7 million this weekend, while Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is forecasted to gross a substantial $13 million. The collective success of these three films has breathed new life into the box office, with business seeing a staggering 100% increase compared to the same weekend last year. It’s an exciting time for cinema lovers like myself!

The sequel to Moana quickly made its mark, breaking records left and right upon its release on November 27th. It shattered the previous record for a Thanksgiving weekend opening, earning an astounding $225.4 million in just five days within U.S. theaters. This impressive sum not only set a new record for the largest five-day debut in Hollywood history, but also surpassed last year’s earnings of The Super Mario Bros. Movie with $204.6 million.

In just a short span of time, the Disney sequel has climbed its way up to become one of the top five highest-earning films of 2024 worldwide. By the close of this weekend, it’s expected to secure the No. 5 spot, surpassed only by Dune: Part Two, Despicable Me 4, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Inside Out 2. To put this into perspective, the initial release of Moana ranked as the 12th highest-grossing film in 2016.

Regardless of mixed reactions from critics, the sequel to Moana, titled Moana 2, has proven itself as a financial powerhouse, indicating Disney’s continued investment in expanding this franchise. There’s an upcoming live-action adaptation of the original film due out in 2026, featuring Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui. Although Disney hasn’t officially announced Moana 3, it appears that it may only be a question of time before they proceed with another installment. The movie’s impressive box office performance notwithstanding, Moana 2 sets the stage for more adventures by introducing Nalo as the primary antagonist. Even if Moana 2 hadn’t broken records, it seems that the filmmakers were already considering where to steer the story in the future.

Apart from the announcement of Moana 3, the primary concern at present is how high Moana 2‘s box office earnings will climb. There’s still a fortnight before the releases of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and The Lion King: Mufasa’s Story, so Moana 2 can avoid significant competition for now. The upcoming film Kraven the Hunter is anticipated to have limited appeal, and even if it did, its R rating would make it less of a challenge to a Disney animated production. Both Sonic 3 and Mufasa could impact Moana 2‘s sales during the holiday season, but this won’t be problematic given its current earnings.
