Moana 2: Why Disney Pivoted From Streaming Series to a Theatrical Movie

As a gamer who has been through countless adventures and epic quests, I can confidently say that Moana 2 is not just another sequel; it’s an uncharted voyage waiting to be embarked upon. Having grown up on Disney classics, I’ve seen the evolution of their storytelling and the magic they weave.

This Thanksgiving season, Moana sets sail on the big screen once more as Disney premieres one of their most eagerly awaited sequels globally. Following in the footsteps of its 2017 predecessor, Moana 2 brings back Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson to reprise their leading roles. Initially planned as a Disney+ series, the success and potential of Moana, one of the most beloved Disney films of the 21st Century, led the creators to make a wise decision and transform it into a theatrical sequel instead.

When chatting with Entertainment Weekly for their latest article on Moana 2, Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee shared insights on why they decided to shift focus from a series in production on streaming platforms.

In speaking about our work, Lee mentioned that we meticulously review our projects at every stage, including the sketching phase. As it grew larger and more elaborate in concept, there was a strong desire to bring it to life on the cinema screen. The creative process unfolded naturally, and it seemed as though it had a life of its own.

The team responsible for creating Moana 2 expressed a comparable feeling, stating that as they progressed with the project, there was a growing sense among them all that the scope of the endeavor was increasing significantly.

It quickly became clear that this project was destined for the silver screen, as director David G. Derrick Jr. put it. This sentiment seemed to resonate throughout the entire studio, as he also noted. Co-director Dana Ledoux Miller further emphasized the talent of their team, stating they possess “the world’s finest artists” and posed the question, “Why aren’t we showcasing their brilliance on the largest screen possible?

Beyond the scale and depth of the tale being suitable for a full-length film, it seems incredibly logical for Moana 2 to grace the big screen. Given that the original Moana has consistently ranked as Disney’s top movie on Disney+ for several years, it appears incongruous for the company to withdraw one of their most successful properties from box office sales and instead place it directly on streaming platforms. After all, even after a theatrical run, it is likely to continue thriving as a hit on Disney+.

It seems more fitting for the grandest and most outstanding tales to be played out on movie theater screens, and for a while, Disney appeared to challenge this notion, albeit partially. However, the transition of Moana 2 from streaming platforms to cinemas demonstrates that Disney’s focus has indeed been realigned towards the big screen.

Lee clarified, “Discussing the importance of cinemas is something we’ve touched upon. While we enjoy Disney+, it’s only a matter of time before content moves there. However, these artists craft narratives they envision unfolding on the grand screen, and that’s where we want the world to experience them as well.

Disney animation rarely creates many sequels,” she explained further. “Our approach is that ideas should originate from the filmmakers. A tale shouldn’t be crafted without a genuine foundation. It must stem from sincerity. If we don’t follow this method, we can’t create an authentic story. For us, the essence of a story lies in the characters first.

To transform the initial concept of a comprehensive series into a standalone feature film required significant revisions. While the fundamental storyline remains unchanged, several characters’ roles underwent modifications to emphasize Moana more prominently, given the reduced scope.

Miller explained that the aim was to fully focus on making Moana’s tale her own within the series. With an expanded cast, they decided to concentrate on the aspects of Moana that made her a compelling hero and explorer. Now, with the grandeur of the big screen, those elements shine brighter than ever before. Essentially, everything we loved about Moana’s journey in the series has been amplified by a factor of 10, making it more thrilling and spectacular.

It’s clear that Disney made a wise choice in releasing this sequel, regardless of the box office figures. While cinemas remain crucial for the industry, even with streaming services gaining popularity, this film is expected to captivate audiences and top the box office charts this autumn.

Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27th.
