Known for his roles in various productions, Adam Devine has made a name for himself within the entertainment industry. However, had circumstances taken a slightly different turn, he may never have graced the silver screen of Hollywood.
As a devoted fan, I can share a personal anecdote about Devine, who once, as a child, narrowly escaped death after being struck by a cement truck. Miraculously, he survived, but his ordeal left him with lasting injuries and significant scars on his legs. Recently, during an appearance on the show, he proudly displayed those scars, ensuring O’Brien and co-hosts Sona Movsesian and Matt Gourley were prepared for what was about to unfold – a rather graphic sight.
According to Devine, what appeared to be an uncooked chicken leg was actually his own. Due to the severe nature of the accident, skin grafts were necessary, requiring approximately 26 or 28 surgeries for recovery. He went on to describe the other leg as being only partly intact, explaining, “The skin was torn off, and what remained was about half a leg.” He continued, “I fractured everything from my knees down, they had to rebuild my legs. My left femur was also broken, some ribs were damaged, I punctured a lung, and there was bleeding from my ears. However, the doctors were relieved to find that there was no apparent brain damage.
Remarkably, Devin attributes the cement truck accident as a catalyst for his comedy career advancement. In 2016, he expressed that many comedians often point to traumatic events in their lives as driving forces towards this path. While some endured abuse like being burned with cigarettes by their fathers, Devine’s situation was different; his father merely pushed him in a wheelchair. Compared to other experiences, his could have been much more severe. Yet, all he had was a cement truck incident.
Devine’s Injuries Have Gotten Worse Recently
Although the accident brought some positivity in Devine’s life, it doesn’t make his life effortless. In April, he openly admitted that the past three years were “a living nightmare” for him. He experienced prolonged periods where sitting, standing, and walking caused him discomfort. Then, a devastating event occurred:
The individual asserted that they were informed he had Stiff Person Syndrome, an agonizing condition characterized by muscle spasms and deterioration. They shared, “Just a month before my son Beau was born, I was told I had it, and they estimated the average lifespan for someone with this disease to be six years.” However, the doctor did not confirm the diagnosis at that time.
I believe I’ve become extremely tense and wound up, and my body has several minor issues and imperfections, that eventually led me to break down. I’m still working through it, but it’s been about three years since this happened.” He concluded.
