As a seasoned film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the rich history of the Olympic Games, I cannot help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I witness the attempt to modernize the ancient concept of the modern pentathlon. The very idea seems like an uphill battle against the inexorable march of time. With rumors swirling that showjumping is set to be replaced by an obstacle course starting from 2028, it’s hard not to wonder if this could be the last hurrah for this most eccentric and captivating of events in its original form.
It’s quite a challenge to refresh an unexpectedly outdated discipline like modern pentathlon. In fact, the proposed switch from horse jumping to an obstacle course after 2028 might lead many athletes, including GB’s current world and Olympic champion Joe Choong, to leave the sport – he’s even considering devoting himself fully to fencing instead. This could be one of the last opportunities to experience this quirky event in its classic form, as initially designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin for the modern Olympics.
