Warning: SPOILERS for the first three episodes of Andor Season 2 are ahead!
In 2022, Andor debuted, and Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma was the only well-known Star Wars character beside Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor in the main cast at that time. The highly praised Season 2, which premiered its initial three episodes on the 2025 TV lineup, carries on narrating her transition from a senator secretly supporting the Rebels to one of the Rebellion’s prominent public figures. However, tonight’s most noteworthy moment for Mon might have been her drunken dance scene in episode three. O’Reilly shared with TopMob that this scene represented an “examination of pain and turmoil” in Mon’s life.
In a different setting, Mon Mothma didn’t indulge in drinking and perform dances on the dance floor out of joy. Instead, this scene took place during her daughter’s wedding, symbolizing her mixed feelings about her daughter marrying into the Sculdun family and her friend Tay Kolma’s approaching peril. Our correspondent, Jeff McCobb, questioned O’Reilly about capturing Mon’s drunken dance, and after showrunner Tony Gilroy commented “Look at what she’s done,” the actress provided this explanation.
Indeed, it was quite extraordinary. The difficulty or intrigue lies in truly understanding her inner turmoil and disarray – it’s as if we’re prying her away from a physicality unseen before. This is due to the fact that she’s suffering internally. To an outsider, unfamiliar with previous scenes, it might appear as though she’s simply enjoying herself at a wedding celebration.
In the first season of Andor, Mon Mothma and her daughter Leia experienced some conflicts and disputes, which is common when a parent deals with a rebellious teenager. Yet, the matter escalates as Leia decided to get married at a tender age, and it’s concerning that her new husband’s father, Davo Sculdun – a Chandrilan banker with a questionable reputation and often referred to as a thug – is involved. To make matters worse, Mon was compelled to meet with Davo due to Tay Kolma’s suggestion for a loan, concealing the 400,000 credits she had secreted away for the Rebellion. In exchange for her assistance, Davo agreed to help only if Mon arranged a meeting between Leia and his son Stekan, thus uniting their families.

Regarding the character Tay, at the beginning of Andor Season 2, his businesses were severely affected by rebel actions, leading him to express feelings of being “underappreciated” towards Mon Mothma regarding her charitable foundation. He hinted that he might reveal sensitive information to Davo Sculdun unless they reached a financial agreement. Although Mon believed a solution could be found, Luthen Rael, who was present at the wedding, felt stronger actions were necessary. Although not explicitly stated, it seems evident that Luthen sent Cinta Kaz to assassinate Tay. Knowing her friend’s impending death only added to Mon’s drunken state as portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly.
Indeed. The perspective of discovery, of pain, and turbulence were indeed dominant. However, there was also a sense of awe as she was given the opportunity to experience something physically fascinating for herself.

Is there any truth to the rumors that Diego Luna might want to part ways with ‘Andor’ after Season 2? What are his thoughts on the series potentially coming to an end?

In Tony Gilroy’s words, there are instances in life when you might spot someone amidst a crowd and incorrectly read their actions. This is precisely what transpired with Mon Mothma in the third episode of Andor‘s second season. She appeared to be carefree while dancing, but her true emotions were hidden – she was both joyful and using alcohol as a means to numb her distress. Regrettably, her circumstances are set to deteriorate further, leading to a point where she’ll have no choice but to abandon her past and commit wholeheartedly to the Rebellion’s cause.
Due to Disney+’s distinct approach to releasing Season 2 of Andor, we’ve already completed nearly a quarter of it. Stay tuned to TopMob for further updates on the series, and don’t forget to peruse our guide that outlines upcoming Star Wars films and television programs.
