Monica Lewinksy knows there is no easy answer when it comes to the White House.
Reflecting on the tumultuous events of 1997, when I found myself at the heart of an affair with a man twice my age – then-President Bill Clinton – and the fallout that followed, I was publicly humiliated and shamed. Looking back, I believe there were more sensitive ways the situation could have been navigated.
She contemplated during her chat with Alex Cooper on the February 25th episode of ‘Call Her Daddy’, saying, “I believe it would have been more appropriate to declare the matter as none of our business. Perhaps resigning or finding an honest way to stay in office without betraying a young person just starting out in life might have been better options.
Lewinsky went on to remark, “While I’m speaking these words, it feels surreal because we’re discussing the highest position of power globally. I don’t want to be unaware or unsuspecting about this situation.
Alex highlighted a question regarding the White House, essentially asking, “At what price do we sacrifice ourselves to safeguard something greater?
Though Lewinsky acknowledged that the situation was intricate because of the large number of individuals potentially involved, she also pondered over the repercussions the scandal brought about – not only for herself, but for all women who were observing during that period.
She pointed out that she couldn’t find the appropriate balance, as there was harm in any case. The collateral damage to women of her generation was immense, as they watched a young woman face harsh criticism on a global stage. She was torn apart for her sexuality, her mistakes, and every aspect of herself.
TopMob News has reached out to representatives for Clinton but has not yet heard back.
Additionally, Lewinsky discussed if any of the individuals implicated in the scandal have extended an apology directly to her.
She clarified, “There have been several individuals from that period whom I’ve encountered later, who admitted they regretted their decisions. These aren’t the prominent figures under scrutiny during the investigation.
However, with the passage of time since the scandal, she expressed her gratitude for being in a position where she no longer requires it anymore.
In response, Clinton (who has been with Hillary Clinton, his wife since 1975) tackled the issue in the 2020 documentary titled “Hillary“.
In the documentary, he expressed his deep regret that Monica Lewinsky‘s life has been marked by the events, which he believes is unjust. Over time, he has observed her efforts to regain a typical life, but he poses the question: what exactly constitutes ‘normal’?
Indeed, Lewinsky, who launched her latest podcast titled “Reclaiming” not too long ago, has been open about her efforts to reshape the story surrounding the scandal. She emphasizes that the past ten years have marked a significant turning point in her life.
Instead, they often call January 16th, the day she was taken into custody by FBI officers when she was 24 years old, as “Survival Day.
In her interview with Rolling Stone, published on February 14th, Lewinsky expressed that the day I’m referring to was the most challenging I’ve faced so far. To put it another way, I want to revisit and reflect on this experience from my own perspective.
She made sure to note that the annual commemoration is not one of pain.
She went on to say, “We mark these occasions. Often times, my mother purchases something for me, or I treat myself, and we take a moment to truly appreciate it. This is when I feel closest to my past.
