As a dedicated Monster Hunter fan with countless hours spent slaying beasts across generations, I must say that Capcom’s decision to allow gender-neutral armor in Monster Hunter Wilds is a long-overdue and welcome change. However, the introduction of Layered Armor feels like a step back into familiar territory, as it remains strictly cosmetic – much like my own wardrobe!
In Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds, there’s a shift in the way armor works, now allowing players to wear any piece regardless of character gender (a feature fans have been asking for a long time). Yet, despite this change, some aspects remain constant, notably with Layered Armor.
During a chat with YouTube personality Rurikhan (as reported by MP1st), game director Yuya Tokuda revealed that Layered Armor can be accessed at a specific stage in the game. Once unlocked, you’ll have the freedom to craft any Layered Armor you desire, and there are also plans to release additional unique Layered Armor as downloadable content. The exact timing of its availability remains uncertain.
Similarly to past entries, Layered Armor will continue to serve a purely decorative purpose. When directly inquired about future DLC for the series possibly including functional or pay-to-win items, and whether the approach still leans towards aesthetics only, Tokuda confirmed that they intend to stay on the same path as before.
2025 sees the arrival of Monster Hunter Wilds, available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms. Catch a glimpse of some fresh and recurring creatures in the latest trailer.
