Capcom’s newest hit game, Monster Hunter Rampage, has surpassed predictions, boasting an impressive 1.2 million simultaneous players on Steam as of my current writing, according to SteamDB.
Placing Monster Hunter Wilds at the top tier among Steam games is undeniably justified, given that only a select few other titles have reached greater heights in terms of peak player count. The current record holder is PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), astonishingly achieving over 3 million simultaneous players at once.
1) In the previous year, the multiplayer survival-crafting game Palworld boasted more than 2 million simultaneous users. Remarkably, even as a solely single-player experience, Black Myth Wukong managed to attract over 2.4 million concurrent players.
In contrast to Capcom and Monster Hunter’s previous game, Monster Hunter World from 2018, which had an impressive 334,000 players simultaneously on Steam at once, the early performance of Monster Hunter Rise has significantly surpassed this figure.
Monster Hunter Wilds garnered favorable feedback from numerous platforms and critics alike, often commending its intricate gameplay mechanics and diverse array of combat-ready monsters.
Despite attracting strong sales thus far, the response from players regarding Monster Hunter Worlds is quite polarized. On Steam, it currently holds a 47% positive rating based on more than 10,000 reviews.
Multiple player evaluations indicate subpar performance in the PC edition of Monster Hunter Worlds, mirroring worries that surfaced during the trial period when players assessed the game’s frame rate under various settings using a pre-release benchmark tool.
In contrast to its predecessors which were primarily built on the MT Framework engine, Monster Hunter Wilds employs Capcom’s own RE engine.
Although RE engines, such as those used in the Resident Evil series, typically perform smoothly with stunning visuals and consistent frame rates, they seem less effective at handling expansive open worlds with intricate dynamic systems.
In my gaming experience last year, Dragon’s Dogma 2 struggled with subpar performance across every version of the game, much like how it did on the RE Engine.
Hopefully we’ll be hearing from Capcom that performance improvements are on the way soon.
In an ideal scenario, the team could benefit significantly by studying the successes and failures of employing this engine in open-world style games, as they are now working on the upcoming engine version, codenamed REX.
In the analysis of Monster Hunter Wilds, our senior editor Jez Corden noted that despite the impressive new monsters, stunningly designed environments, and ongoing enjoyment of hunting with companions, he felt that the fundamental Monster Hunter experience seemed less refined in Wilds. If adjustments for balance aren’t made, it’s uncertain whether Monster Hunter Wilds can match the lasting appeal of its predecessor. However, novice players might find the more gradual learning process appealing.

I can’t wait to dive into Monster Hunter Wilds alongside my friends who share the same passion for gaming. However, resisting the allure of the stunning steelbook edition is proving challenging; I fear I may give in soon.
Monster Hunter World holds the title as Capcom’s best-selling video game ever, with a staggering 23 million copies sold by the year 2024. This remarkable milestone can be largely attributed to its release on both consoles and PC, coupled with user-friendly features that streamlined various aspects of the gaming experience, making it more accessible for players.
I’m not certain if Monster Hunter Wilds, or any other Capcom game in the future for that matter, can bridge the significant sales gap, but it has made an impressive debut and is likely to rank among the top-selling games of 2025.
As an onlooker, I anticipate that future enhancements (in terms of content and performance) will play a crucial role, given how Monster Hunter: World significantly expanded with the release of Iceborne expansion in 2019. This addition essentially doubled the game’s size, introducing new tundra-like landscapes teeming with creatures that flourished in cold, snowy environments.
Monster Hunter Wilds is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5.
