Monster Hunter Wilds Reigns Supreme

In the United States during February 2025, Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds was the top-selling game of the month. It has since become the highest-selling game of the year in the U.S, surpassing Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as the leading title.

Based on recent findings shared by Mat Piscatella, Executive Director and Analyst at Circana, he disclosed insights about the American video game market on Wednesday through Bluesky.

In the wake of Monster Hunter Wilds, we find Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 from Warhorse Studios, as well as Civilization 7 by Firaxis Games. This list, featuring a notable number of fresh titles, places Obsidian and Xbox’s Avowed in seventh position.

The PlayStation 5 outperformed all other gaming consoles in terms of both dollar revenue and unit sales, while the Xbox Series X|S ranked second in both categories.

The increase in subscription costs rose significantly by 9% compared to the previous year, however, this growth was counterbalanced by decreases in hardware and software sales. In the month under consideration, video game sales amounted to $4.5 billion, representing a decrease of approximately 6% compared to February 2024.

Regularly keep in mind that Circana monitors game sales based on the total amount spent, rather than the number of copies sold. Certain publishers such as Nintendo refrain from sharing digital data, and some developers like Larian choose not to disclose any data whatsoever.

Take-Two Interactive is once again providing up-to-date digital data, so the true influence of games like Grand Theft Auto 5 is now accurately represented in the sales charts.

Monster Hunter is at the top, and it seems to be staying there

The growing success of Monster Hunter as one of Capcom’s most successful series is worth examining, with Monster Hunter World (its precursor from 2018) being Capcom’s highest-grossing game ever sold.

It remains uncertain whether Wild can defeat World, but the game has undeniably started impressively, as Capcom recently confirmed that it has surpassed 8 million units sold globally.

Observing the gaming scene, it seems quite plausible that if Capcom continues to deliver content updates enriching the gameplay with fresh quests and monsters for battle, Monster Hunter Rise might very well secure a spot among the top three best-selling titles of the year in the U.S. by year’s end.

It’s great to witness the successful debut of Avowed, given that numerous Xbox console gamers are likely to join via Xbox Game Pass. Fingers crossed for more content from Obsidian Entertainment soon.
