Monster Summer Stars Mel Gibson and Mason Thames Talk Their Thrilling New Adventure

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a soft spot for horror films and a fondness for nostalgic ’80s vibes, I must say that “Monster Summer” piqued my interest right from the get-go. The title alone hinted at an exciting tale of summertime terror, but it was the impressive cast list that truly sealed the deal.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, “Monster Summer” might initially conjure up images of somber dramas laden with profound themes. However, this film is far from it – it’s a pulse-pounding horror flick that exudes an ’80s vibe in every frame. The movie, masterfully directed by David Henrie, who you might recognize from “Wizards of Waverly Place,” boasts an impressive cast including Mason Thames (from “The Black Phone”), Lorraine Bracco (“The Sopranos”), and the legendary Mel Gibson (“Lethal Weapon”). Interestingly, both Thames and Gibson recently chatted with ComicBook about how their past roles aided them in getting into character for these captivating performances.

In the movie, Gibson portrays an ex-detective brought back to solve mysteries that others can’t, while Simmons assumes the role of the main character, shouldering much of the film’s narrative.

Gibson stated that the script was excellent because it presented a situation where an actor could meet expectations and then subvert them, which is beneficial in storytelling. For him, the plot was appealing. It revolves around an old, retired detective who has secluded himself from life, but encounters a youthful character with world-saving aspirations. Through their journey, they both learn from each other while working together to solve a mystery. Essentially, it’s a buddy movie scenario.

Fresh from starring in “The Black Phone,” Thames finds himself involuntarily making connections with the film, appreciating that they make suitable companions despite his slight unease over consistently portraying a frightened expression throughout.

Thames quipped, “I guess you could say that, similar to feeling frightened, The Black Phone put me in that position. I find myself making that expression quite often. It’s not the most flattering look, let me tell you, but it happens frequently. However, what I truly enjoyed about Monster Summer, following closely behind The Black Phone, was the refreshing change of pace. After being terrified and nearly axed by Ethan Hawke, working with Mel was an absolute delight.

Here’s the (brief) official synopsis for Monster Summer, which hits theaters on October 4th:

When an enigmatic power threatens to spoil their grand summer vacation, Noah and his companions join forces with a former police officer to delve into a hair-raising quest aimed at rescuing their island.
