As a long-time enthusiast of true crime narratives, I must confess that the upcoming release of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has me utterly thrilled! Having followed the Menendez brothers’ case since its sensational heyday in the 90s, I can hardly wait to see how Netflix and Ryan Murphy breathe new life into this captivating tale.
Netflix unveiled the initial sneak peek for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which marks Ryan Murphy’s second installment in his series of true crime dramas under the “Monster” banner. The show is slated to premiere in September, with two more seasons already commissioned due to the success of last year’s series on Richard Dahmer. Murphy and executive producer Ian Brennan have chosen the Menendez brothers, whose case was a sensational tabloid topic in the 1990s, as their next project. Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez will portray the brothers, who were found guilty of killing their parents Jose and Mary Louise (previously played by Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny).
The brothers were recently featured in a docuseries over at Peacock as well. You can see Netflix’s Monsters teaser below.

Here’s the official synopsis for the series:
After the huge success of Dahmer, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true crime anthology series is back with a new story: Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Tale. This installment delves into the real-life case of brothers, Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.
Instead of asserting they aimed to claim their family inheritance, the brothers contend, and continue to do so even while serving life sentences with no chance of parole, that their behavior was prompted by a lifelong fear resulting from physical, emotional, and sexual abuse inflicted upon them by their parents.
Having spent a significant portion of my professional career delving into the intricate world of true crime, I can attest that “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is indeed a captivating exploration of one of history’s most notorious cases. It resonates deeply with me as it mirrors the fascination that has gripped our modern society, stirring intense debates on the question: Who are the real monsters? The series offers an immersive glimpse into their lives and the events leading up to the heinous crime, making us ponder over the complexities of human nature and accountability.
Other than Chavez, Koch, Bardem, and Sevigny, the series also features Nathan Lane playing Dominick Dunne, with Ari Graynor portraying Leslie Abramson. The cast is further expanded to include Leslie Grossman as Judalon Smyth, Dallas Roberts as Dr. Jerome Oziel, Paul Adelstein as David Conn, Jason Butler Harner as Detective Les Zoeller, Enrique Murciano as Carlos Baralt, Michael Gladis as Tim Rutten, Drew Powell as Detective Tom Linehan, Charlie Hall as Craig Cignarelli, Gil Ozeri as Dr. William Vicary, Jeff Perry as Peter Hoffman, Tessa Auberjonois as Dr. Laurel Oziel, Tanner Stine as Perry Berman, Larry Clarke as Brian Andersen, Jade Pettyjohn as Jamie Pisarcik, and Marlene Forte as Marta Cano.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is coming to Netflix on September 19th.
