As a longtime admirer and follower of Monty Don‘s enchanting gardening journey, I am overjoyed by the news that he will continue to grace our screens with his wisdom and charm for at least another two years. With 20 years under his belt on Gardeners’ World, it’s comforting to know that this horticultural maestro won’t be hanging up his trowel anytime soon.
Since the year 2003, horticulturist and broadcaster Monty Don has been the host of BBC’s Gardeners’ World, with a brief hiatus from 2008 to 2011 during which Toby Buckland served as the temporary host.
After two decades leading the program, some may have fretted about Don leaving – but he has since assured us that he will remain in his position.
Actually, Don isn’t coming back for a single additional season on the gardening show; instead, he’ll be there for two full seasons. This means he’ll serve as the main host of the program through at least the year 2026.
In a conversation during the recent edition of TopMob magazine, Don shared the news about his plans regarding the show when prompted by their questions.
He said: “I never make plans beyond two years, but I’ve agreed to do another two [from January 2025].
Each time I question myself, “Will I truly carry on with this?” However, the reality is that I actually find pleasure in it. I consider myself fortunate because it takes place within my very own backyard. If the project turns out to be skillfully crafted, I will persist in it.
On Monday, 10th January, starting at 8pm, Don had a conversation with TopMob magazine regarding his forthcoming BBC Two series titled “Monty Don’s British Gardens.
The program will have Don journeying through each of the four countries, exploring gardens nationwide, ranging from those situated in the harshest environments to private royal gardens and beyond.
When interviewed by TopMob magazine, he explained that his recent interest in British Gardens stems from a lifelong passion for gardening, which was further fueled by his global travels to gardens since the publication of “Around the World in 80 Gardens” in 2008.
Gardeners’ World primarily focuses on the practical aspects of gardening, offering insights into techniques and methods. In contrast, the travel programs delve into the cultural significance of gardening; they explore reasons behind gardening in different regions and the personal meaning it holds for individuals.
Suddenly it occurred to us, why not examine our immediate surroundings with a cultural or anthropological perspective similar to how we study other societies?
