As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The unstoppable duo, Moon Girl and her colossal companion Devil Dinosaur, are approaching their 10th anniversary. To mark this momentous occasion, there’s no better way than a jumbo-sized one-shot bringing back two of Moon Girl’s brilliant creators, writer Brandon Montclare, and artist Natacha Bustos. To make it even more enticing, the special issue Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special #1 also includes an extraordinary story by writer Justina Ireland and artist Luca Claretti. This tale takes Lunella Lafayette’s legacy to unforeseen heights with the introduction of Devil Girl and Moon Dino, setting a surprising new direction for our favorite dinosaur-loving genius!
In this conversation, ComicBook chatted with Brandon Montclare and Justina Ireland regarding the imminent Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special #1. I was curious to learn about Montclare’s experience creating Moon Girl a decade ago, as well as their approach to combining her with Devil Dinosaur. They shared insights into how they generated storylines for the duo and what we can expect from Moon Girl in this special one-shot to celebrate her 10th anniversary.
Regarding Ireland, they’ve shared additional insights about Devil Girl and Moon Dino, such as their true identities and the link between Devil Girl and Moon Girl. Additionally, we have access to exclusive previews for the Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special #1, illustrated by Natacha Bustos and Luca Claretti, along with a unique variant cover of a Devil Girl design sheet by Anand Ramcheron.
Could you share with us a glimpse of the past, about 10 years ago when you were given the task of creating Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Brandon? What were the discussions like among your team during those initial stages as you developed the idea for Moon Girl?
Brandon Montclare: I had worked on a few small Marvel projects, but my first major writing assignment was the self-published “Rocket Girl” at Image Comics. Amy Reeder, one of the creators of Moon Girl, collaborated with me on “Rocket Girl”. Additionally, Natacha Bustos, another co-creator of Moon Girl, illustrated a short story I wrote for “Strange Sports Stories” at Vertigo. Reflecting on this: I believe a significant factor in our success is that the concept of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is large enough to accommodate each of the three creators’ unique ideas. We come from different life experiences and comic book backgrounds, and our diverse perspectives contributed to the project’s success!
Our first chat with Marvel was quite brisk! Editor Mark Paniccia took a liking to Rocket Girl and inquired if we had anything comparable that could fit at Marvel. We convened to explore potential characters/titles, and we opted for something less mainstream to have greater creative freedom and introduce fresh concepts. Mark proposed Devil Dinosaur initially, an idea I found intriguing but unappealing to Amy due to its focus on a t-rex devouring cavemen. However, as soon as he mentioned Devil Dinosaur, he also suggested Moon Girl – drawing inspiration from Devil Dinosaur’s previous sidekick, Moon Boy. This concept was so compelling that we didn’t even consider other options. Naturally, we revamped the character for modern Marvel Manhattan, making Lunella Lafayette akin to a classic Marvel scientist-turned-hero. We anticipated it would run for six exciting issues… but the story has since become legendary.
When it comes to these two characters – Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur – while Moon Girl might grab most of the spotlight, Devil Dinosaur equally deserves prime positioning. Was there anything particularly tough yet thrilling that you encountered as you delved into their relationship over various issues?
Jack Kirby played a pivotal role in the title in two significant ways. Firstly, he wrote and illustrated nine issues of “Devil Dinosaur” from the ’70s. Secondly, his profound impact on the Marvel Universe is equally apparent, influencing its very fabric. As for Moon Girl, I aimed to infuse her with everything marvelous that the Marvel Universe encompasses. Character-wise, she embodies a superhero who remains an underdog due to her human flaws. On the plot side, she interacts extensively with other characters within the Marvel Universe. A recurring theme throughout all 47 issues of the original run is Lunella Lafayette’s struggle to find her place in this world.
As a movie critic, I must express that Devil Dinosaur transcends mere visual appeal or spectacle. This ferocious T-rex serves as an irresistible eye-catcher indeed! Yet, it’s the comic book treasure nestled in a vibrant cover. In terms of characters, Devil Dinosaur and Moon Girl represent a captivating contrast – one towering in size, the other small but mighty; one brimming with confidence, the other battling insecurities.
The challenges that come with creating a comic book series centered around a 30-foot T-rex are also what make this project so exhilarating. How does one seamlessly incorporate such a colossal creature into sequential storytelling, panel after panel? And how can we convey dialogue when one of the duo communicates primarily through growls? Solving these riddles is what makes the writing process an engaging adventure.
How did you approach celebrating Moon Girl’s 10-year anniversary in a manner that pays tribute to her character while also making her appealing to a fresh wave of admirers?
Innovative minds have been guiding Moon Girl towards fresh territories, introducing concepts that seem unimaginable yet appear in new comic issues. The animated series offers a fresh perspective as well. To me, the primary motivation behind creating a new Marvel character is their immersion into this timeless tale that spans decades, shaped by countless writers, artists, editors, colorists, letterers, and office staff, not to mention the enthusiastic fans. The evolution of Moon Girl’s storyline on those pages can only be attributed to the readers who joined her journey.
To celebrate our 10th anniversary, I’ve made my script feel quite nostalgic, yet familiar. Although characters evolve over time, they should retain their essential identity. Since Lunella has always been ten years old, I thought it would be amusing to have her reach the age of ten in the comic just like she is in reality. Readers might find this a case of “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” However, don’t let that fool you! I can do this (not only because I’m a co-creator!) because the second story in our 10th Anniversary Special is a thrilling new “Devil Girl and Moon Dinosaur” tale. As the title suggests, this story will certainly shake things up!
In your question, you’re asking Justina and Luca Claretti to introduce two characters named Devil Girl and Moon Dino, with Devil Girl being depicted as a descendant of Lunella from the future. You want to know how far into the future these characters originate, and any details about their story that they can share.
“Could you kindly explain to us who Devil Girl and Moon Dino are, as presented by Justina and Luca Claretti? Specifically, we’re interested in knowing the timeframe from which these characters come, and any interesting details about their story that they might disclose.
Justina Ireland: Artemizia, also known as Devil Girl, and her dinosaur companion, Skrex, reside in a far-off world called the Savage Moon. This moon is said to have been fashioned by Artemizia’s great-grandmother Lunella following a colossal catastrophe on Earth named the Descension. The inhabitants of the Savage Moon coexist peacefully with enhanced dinosaurs, but excitement and danger lurk both near and far… however, the perils of Earth are not without their complications.
Will Devil Girl eventually be recognized as the most intelligent character in the Marvel Universe, or does she possess a distinct characteristic that sets her apart from others like Lunella?
It’s likely that Artemizia perceives herself as the cleverest girl across the entire known universe, fueled by an unwarranted sense of self-assurance, which contrasts sharply with her older sister Luz’s perspective. Meanwhile, while Artemizia demonstrates intelligence and a deep affection for those she holds dear, much like Lunella did, she possesses a unique, bold personality that sets her apart.
