Moon Knight: Jed MacKay Talks New Series Fist of Khonshu and Blood Hunt Fallout (Exclusive)

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who has witnessed countless superheroes rise and fall, I can confidently say that Moon Knight’s journey is one for the ages. The latest twist – his resurrection by none other than Khonshu himself – has added yet another layer of intrigue to this complex character.

Moon Knight, who was thought to be deceased, has returned and finds himself on a head-on clash with his deity, Khonshu. Marc Spector, bravely waged wars as part of the Midnight Mission, but met his end in battle against the new Black Spectre, Robert Plesko. This left Tigra, Hunter’s Moon, and the rest of the Midnight Mission to continue without him. However, not long after Moon Knight’s demise, a vampire infestation swept through the Marvel Universe during the Blood Hunt event. The Avengers banded together to tackle this danger, and surprisingly, they were reinforced by the reanimated Moon Knight, who was mysteriously revived by Khonshu. Now, Moon Knight is gearing up for his next adventure in a brand-new series while grappling with owing allegiance to the god he once abandoned.

In preparation for the debut of “Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu“, ComicBook had a chat with author Jed MacKay. For those unfamiliar, Khonshu has been held captive in an Asgardian prison since the end of “Age of Khonshu” as depicted by Jason Aaron in his “Avengers”. With the need for Khonshu’s aid in “Blood Hunt”, Tigra and Hunter’s Moon embark on a covert operation to liberate Khonshu. Afterward, Khonshu dispatches an army of resurrected Fists against the vampires. Guess who’s commanding these Fists? You got it – Moon Knight himself!

In our conversation with MacKay, we delved into the part that Khonshu will play in the upcoming series, his thoughts on Marc Spector’s death and rebirth, an encounter between Moon Knight (The Shroud) and the false Moon Knight (The Shroud), how the new “Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu” differs from the previous two “Moon Knight” series written by MacKay, and more. Additionally, we have exclusive access to uncolored interior pages from “Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu” #1, created by Alessandro Cappuccio, as well as the cover and summary for “Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu” #2, set for release in November.

Khonshu Is Back

Following the reading of Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #0, it’s evident that Khonshu is set to play a significant part in the series. Let’s explore the narrative opportunities that have opened up now that Khonshu has been freed from his captivity. Additionally, what hidden dangers lurk in the darkness that Khonshu hinted at in the zero issue?

In essence, during the “Age of Khonshu,” having him safely locked away was one of Moon Knight’s few advantages. So, it’s no surprise that as things start to fall into place in his life, that sense of stability might be compromised. By the end of Vengeance, you’ll notice that Khonshu doesn’t hesitate to make demands on his followers, and this trend is unlikely to change anytime soon.

Moon Knight Is Keeping a Secret

As a long-time fan of Marvel Comics, I can shed some light on the mindset of Marc Spector (also known as Moon Knight) as we dive into this new series. Given his extensive history and complex personality, it’s intriguing to explore how he feels about Hunter’s Moon and Tigra carrying on the Midnight Mission in his absence.

In “Vengeance of the Moon Knight” #9, we’ll explore the consequences of Moon Knight clashing with the Shroud, which stemmed from the events in issue #8. However, this is not something that will be a major focus in “Fist of Khonshu”. Instead, we’ll see Moon Knight grappling with how his mission has evolved during his absence, and simultaneously dealing with a brand-new threat approaching him from an unexpected direction. There’s a sense of pride and guilt here, as clever readers may recognize that Moon Knight died guarding a secret, a secret that now jeopardizes what he values most.

Different Themes of Moon Knight

As a devoted fan, I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the rich universe you’ve crafted for Moon Knight throughout your tenure. The build-up to his death and rebirth in Blood Hunt was nothing short of epic! Moving forward, will there be any thematic shifts between your initial Moon Knight series, Vengeance of the Moon Knight, and now Fist of Khonshu? I’m eager to see how the story unfolds!

Jed MacKay expresses that working on a long-lasting series like Moon Knight is predictably challenging, as we didn’t anticipate reaching issue #40 when we began. The Moon Knight of today stands in stark contrast to the character three years ago. Initially, we focused on redemption, with Moon Knight grappling with the aftermath of the Age of Khonshu in the Avengers, and his redemption culminated in his death at issue #30. Post-death, Vengeance confronted a unique set of consequences – Moon Knight had inadvertently established an institution around himself, and it was time to explore if this institution could endure without him.

Moving forward from themes of redemption and legacy, the storyline now focuses on rebirth for Moon Knight. Given that his objectives seem to be accomplished, we wonder about his future plans. With a second chance at life, how will he utilize it? Since his departure, what has changed in his world, and what were the incomplete matters when he passed away?
