2022 saw the debut of Marvel’s “Moon Knight” on Disney+, starring Oscar Isaac as the protagonist, Marc Spector, who is both a tormented individual and the embodiment of the moon deity Khonshu from Egyptian mythology. The show delves into the life of Spector, a man suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and his alternate personas Steven Grant and Jake Lockley. Throughout the series, they struggle with their own reality and their obligations to Khonshu. While dealing with numerous personal struggles, they work tirelessly to bring down Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), a cult leader modeled after an Eastern religious figure, who seeks global domination in the name of another Egyptian deity, Ammit.
Despite Ethan Hawke receiving acclaim for his role as Harrow in the Marvel series, the show’s creator, Jeremy Slater, initially envisioned a different character as Marc Spector’s on-screen foe. In an exclusive interview with ComicBook, Slater discussed potential candidates for the complex hero, hinted at a possible second season, and mentioned if he would be involved in its production.
Slater Initially Had Raoul Bushman as Moon Knight’s Nemesis
Slater shared that the Moon Knight series we saw on Disney+ deviated significantly from the one he originally scripted. He explained, “Ultimately, Marvel chose a different path and the director assembled his own group of writers.” He maintains a positive outlook, stating, “When you’re invited to play in such a vast sandbox, it’s like playing with someone else’s toys for a while. At the end of the day, those toys aren’t yours. You understand that going in, so it wasn’t unexpected at all.
In the Moon Knight comics, Bushman is a formidable mercenary who has a strained relationship with Marc Spector. Often viewed as Moon Knight’s main adversary, Bushman offers an intriguing contrast to Marc, being more aggressive and morally ambiguous than the Marvel hero. Removing Bushman from the series wasn’t due to a shift in creative leadership, but rather because it was challenging to differentiate him from another renowned Marvel mercenary, Erik Killmonger.
Slater explained to us that the intention was for Marc Spector to serve as Khonshu’s avatar, and then pit him against Bushman who would become an avatar of another Egyptian deity. However, the writers chose a different approach with Harrow, making him Ammit’s disciple instead. Slater added, “The challenge we constantly faced was that Black Panther had recently been released, and Michael B. Jordan’s performance as Killmonger in that film was so captivating that it left an immense impact…everything we wrote seemed to echo his work, making our content feel somewhat derivative.
Moon Knight Season 2 Up in the Air, Slater Not Likely to Return
While it’s been some time since Black Panther, one might argue that Bushman could now be differentiated from Killmonger, making him a viable candidate for a second season of Moon Knight. However, the specifics regarding his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remain unclear.
According to Slater, if another “Moon Knight” character emerges, it’s up to Kevin Feige and Oscar Isaac to decide. Once Feige determines the optimal way to utilize this character, finds the appropriate story, and identifies the right storytellers to bring it to life, it would surprise me if we don’t see Moon Knight again in the future.
As a die-hard film buff, I can’t help but share my excitement about the possibility of more Moon Knight in the MCU. Although I personally have no plans to revisit the IP or television realm as I’m currently focusing on making the leap into directing full-length films, I sincerely hope my speculation proves correct. Moon Knight was a masterfully crafted series that tackled heavy themes like trauma, mental illness, and grief with great finesse. Oscar Isaac delivered an exceptional, multi-layered performance as Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley, all while dishing out the action we’ve come to expect from Marvel’s heroes. If there were a second season, a showdown between Isaac’s Moon Knight and Bushman would make for some unforgettable viewing.
Moon Knight is now streaming on Disney+.
