“Morbius Time,” a standout element from Sony’s 2022 Morbius solo film and now officially part of Marvel Comics lore, is loathed by the bloodthirsty Michael Morbius. This phrase gained popularity when Morbius was released in theaters, and due to its comic book roots, it’s a meme that, like any resilient vampire-like creature, will endure forever.
The “Blood Hunt” event, a Marvel Comics crossover focusing on a global vampire apocalypse, was particularly significant. The instigator? None other than the vigilant vampire slayer, Blade himself! With portals to the Darkforce Dimension being ripped open, casting shadows over the sun, it led to an all-out invasion by Morbius’s uncommunicative kin.
As a fan, I can’t help but recall this pivotal moment in Marvel history as a series of significant and awe-inspiring alterations to their lore. Among these changes, the resurrection of Marc Spector as Moon Knight, Mile Morales’s transformation into a vampire, and perhaps most notably, Victor Von Doom seizing the title of Sorcerer Supreme from Doctor Strange. However, amidst all these pulse-pounding twists and turns, there’s one change that’s not as easy to overlook: the official recognition of Morbin’ Time.
In “The Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt,” our friendly neighborhood Spiderman navigates a three-part storyline connected to this event. As he works tirelessly to protect both uninfected New Yorkers and the city’s vampires, he encounters Misty Knight and the Lizard. They reveal that Michael Morbius has almost perfected a cure for vampirism—or so they claim. Unfortunately, someone else snatched him away before the cure could be administered.
The previously mentioned abductors are Theocritus, or as he’s more commonly known, TJ, and his blood-vampire company Hemoglobin Inc. Despite their grandiose names, TJ is a mere lackey from the infamous Beyond Corporation. His name sounds too noble for his true nature, believe me. Lately, TJ has decided to branch out on his own, establishing this enterprise with the aim of developing a cure for vampirism using data gathered during Beyond’s experiments on Morbius. Of course, they’re conducting their research by kidnapping individuals and transforming them into vampires to experiment upon, intending to sell the cure. So, TJ isn’t exactly doing this out of kindness; he has more sinister motives.
Despite Hemoglobin Inc.’s questionable activities, Dr. Mike is drawn by the prospect of substantial funding and a real laboratory setting, leading him to collaborate with TJ. In his enthusiasm, TJ utters the phrase, sending shivers down Morbius’ spine – “It’s Morbin’ Time!” Unfamiliar with the reference, Morbius expresses confusion but warns TJ that if he repeats it, there could be serious consequences.
The meme that turned the mediocre anti-hero film into an internet sensation has now been officially recognized as part of Marvel Comics lore, and even Morbius himself has expressed his thoughts on it! It’s not hard to imagine how he might feel given that his name has become synonymous with hilarious edits of people freaking out in theaters over something they thought he said. It seems fitting that this meme made its way into canon thanks to TJ, since if you appreciate it, you can simply be happy that it was said, and if you don’t, well, TJ is intended to be a dislikable character, so feel free to dislike him as much as you want.
To neatly conclude matters, in the final analysis, Morbs (a moniker disliked equally by him, given by TJ) eventually completed his cure utilizing the resources supplied by Hemoglobin Inc. However, this remedy only proved effective for newly transformed vampires and failed to affect old-timers like himself. A melancholic end for a man yearning for liberation from his affliction, but he was granted continued access to the lab post-arrest of TJ by The Beyond Corporation’s Maxine Danger, due to TJ initiating a rival business using Beyond research in violation of their contract. TJ is escorted away by a formidable adversary, and maybe this is the retribution he deserved for bringing Morbius into the comic book milieu.
