Morbius Star Admits They Took Marvel Role Because They've "Got a Mortgage to Pay"

As a long-time fan of both Jared Harris and the Marvel universe, I found his candid admission about taking the role in Morbius for financial reasons to be quite relatable. After all, who among us hasn’t made a decision based on practicality at some point in our lives? It’s easy to judge from the outside, but I’ve learned that sometimes we need to prioritize our needs, especially when it comes to paying the mortgage.

Jared Harris, who plays Morbius, openly discusses his motivation for joining Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff. It appears that financial needs were the driving factor. In an interview with Britain’s i News (via Entertainment Weekly), Harris candidly admits that he accepted the role of Dr. Emil Nicholas because he required a monetary boost, and he was fully aware of the challenges associated with the Marvel film.

Harris mentioned that he’s currently responsible for a mortgage payment,” he explained, “and at times, he finds himself agreeing to opportunities just to earn some income.

He also noted that, in his estimation, Morbius would have been improved with more humor.

Harris noted that comedic movies tend to be successful when they are enjoyed by people with a good sense of humor. He emphasized that these films should not be treated like works of high literature. In other words, the movie in question might have benefited from having a playful, mischievous tone instead.

2022 saw the release of Morbius, a disappointing performance in Sony’s lineup of movies centered around characters related to Spider-Man. Featuring Harris, Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, and Matt Smith as his adversary Milo, the movie received negative reviews from critics and failed to impress at the box office, earning a mere $167 million globally against its estimated production budget of $75 million. The film was even nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award in the “Worst Director” category, with director Daniel Espinosa acknowledging earlier this year that he may not have been the ideal choice to direct Morbius.

Espinosa expressed that it’s quite challenging to create a film by committee and in retrospect, he believes another director might have been more suitable for the project instead.

On the contrary, whereas Harris offers suggestions on potential improvements for the film Morbius, Emma Roberts, the lead actress of Madame Web, attributes the poor performance of the movie she was part of to internet culture.

Roberts shared his enthusiasm for ‘Madame Web’, stating he found the movie captivating and the cast exceptional. He praised director S.J. Clarkson for her outstanding work, expressing that she was the driving force behind his decision to be part of the film. He believes that if it wasn’t for the prevalence of internet humor and everything being turned into a joke, the response would have been more positive. This is something he often finds disappointing, even in projects he has been involved with himself.

Despite the fact that both “Morbius” and “Madame Web” didn’t succeed for Sony, the Spider-Man universe persists. The upcoming movie “Kraven the Hunter” is scheduled to hit theaters on December 13.
