Back in 2018, when Bethesda unveiled Starfield, I was one of many eagerly awaiting this cosmic journey from the creators of epic open-world RPGs like Fallout 3 and Skyrim. The idea of their signature gameplay elements transitioning into outer space was tantalizing. Furthermore, the prospect of a fresh, unique universe from Bethesda was thrilling instead of another installment in those beloved series.
However, when Starfield finally dropped in 2023, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for some gamers like myself. It even sparked doubt among us about whether this new franchise could reach the heights of The Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Yet, despite the mixed reviews, Bethesda remains optimistic that their space odyssey still holds great potential. For fans like me, we’ll have to wait and see if this cosmic adventure reaches the same legendary status as those classic RPG series.
In a recent job listing for a PR director at ZeniMax (as spotted by Timur222), the initial paragraph mentions all the brands owned by Bethesda. Generally, being an entertainment franchise involves more than one release or related content based on the original product. For instance, under Bethesda’s roof, Fallout includes several games, and a new TV series featuring Ella Purnell (from Arcane) and Walter Goggins (Invincible). Notably, the first game mentioned in this job post is Starfield.
At this stage, it might be a bit premature to label Starfield as a fully-fledged franchise. So far, the only directly connected elements are the main game and its expansion, Shattered Space. The animated shorts released by Bethesda certainly add some flavor, but the extent to which they contribute to the RPG’s universe is debatable.
It’s plausible that Bethesda views Starfield as a franchise since there might be additional games or related content being developed. When first announced in 2018, it was billed as the developer’s “first new franchise in twenty-five years.” Given how modern media tends to spawn multiple entries, it isn’t difficult to envision another game for what could turn into a series. That being said, with The Elder Scrolls 6 still in production, another Starfield game is likely quite some time away. Please remember that this is all speculation, so consider it with caution.
In the year 2023, when Starfield debuted, it generally received positive feedback from critics. Based on ratings aggregated by Metacritic, it earned an average score of 83. On the ComicBook rating scale, which ranges from 1 to 5, this equates to about a 4 out of 5 – the same score we assigned to it in our review.
In our assessment, if it appears as though we’re being critical of the game, it’s because high standards have been built for Bethesda over time, and not every expectation was fulfilled. However, despite these shortcomings, I am eager to replay Starfield again.
In September 2024, the significant expansion titled “Shattered Space” was unveiled, marking its debut as the first major expansion for the game “Starfield.” This update introduced a fresh narrative along with an array of new tools such as weapons, armor, and equipment to utilize. Additionally, it incorporated newly discovered star systems and planets to delve into. It’s been confirmed that a second significant expansion is in the works, though specific details remain scarce for now.
