It’s clear now that the future of Mortal Kombat 1 is no longer in question, as its developer, NetherRealm Studios, has officially confirmed this through their social media channels. They announced that there will be no additional DLC for MK1 and are moving on to a new project instead. This information aligns with earlier reports suggesting that future DLC was cancelled due to the perceived poor sales of Khaos Reigns.
It’s regrettable, but our NetherRealm team must redirect their efforts towards our upcoming project to ensure it reaches its full potential and exceeds your expectations. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Information about updates for Mortal Kombat 1 can be found on official social media platforms associated with the game. The team acknowledges requests to keep supporting the game and intends to fix bugs and send out balance adjustments, but there will no longer be new DLC characters or story chapters added moving forward. A subsequent post acknowledges fan disappointment, but emphasizes that the studio needs to focus on its next project in order to make it as fantastic as possible. Unfortunately, a specific timeline for future balance changes has not been shared, but series co-creator Ed Boon has reached out to fans via social media to gather input on which characters require further refinement.
The formal confirmation serves as a formality since it was already apparent that MK1 wouldn’t receive additional DLC following the unveiling of the appropriately named Definitive Edition. On the same day, the announcement and release took place, with all previous DLC included along with numerous new costumes. These outfits quickly appeared in the in-game store almost simultaneously. Many of these costumes were linked to the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, scheduled for October 24th, which hasn’t even released a trailer yet, causing some to assume that the release of these skins might have been accelerated.
Some people are delighted to move away from the initial version of MK1, largely due to its bumpy debut. However, not everyone shares this sentiment. Many believe the studio ended the game’s development too soon, as titles like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 continue to unveil additional content. Previously, Boon had hinted that MK1 should receive continued support beyond MK11.
In July 2023, he stated that our plans should not go below this level, with two months left before launch. He expects our team to continue supporting this game for at least as long as [Mortal Kombat 11]. However, he also hinted that we might support it even longer, finding joy in the dynamic of releasing new characters post-launch and observing their relationships.
If we consider the technical aspect, it’s possible that balance updates could extend the life of MK1 for a few more months. However, in terms of character support, MK11 has been around longer than MK1. The last DLC fighter for MK11 was released 574 days after its launch, while T-1000, the final character for MK1, became available 546 days post-launch.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say, it’s still up in the air what NetherRealm Studios is cooking next. But with whispers of history, speculation, and a recent buzz, many believe we might be seeing the return of Injustice 3 on the horizon. Even some Warner Bros. social media accounts have been hinting at something Injustice-related, stoking the fire of that rumor even more!
