Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Ending – What is Going On?

As a long-time fan of the Mortal Kombat series, I must say that this latest expansion, Khaos Reigns, has certainly kept me on my toes! The intricate web of alliances and betrayals among our beloved characters is reminiscent of a Shakespearean tragedy, with twists and turns galore.

A fresh installment of “Mortal Kombat” is quite a spectacle, particularly nowadays. However, its impact has been somewhat lessened after “Mortal Kombat 1,” which restarted the timeline once more…only to confuse matters by reintroducing old antagonists. The conclusion was chaotic, but it hinted at a battle with a new and unexpected Titan – Havik. What sort of carnage might he cause in the future? Could Liu Kang’s timeline experience an even more disastrous outcome than previously? How many episodes of Invasions will fans have to endure beforehand?

The long-awaited release of “Khaos Reigns” has arrived, serving as the inaugural paid story extension for “Mortal Kombat 1“. While it provides a resolution to the epic conflict, it does so with a more subdued tone compared to the series’ recent narrative developments. Here’s what unfolds, how it concludes, and where the saga is heading next. Proceed with caution as this discussion includes spoilers for both the primary game and expansion.

In the finale of Mortal Kombat 1, the mighty Titan Shang Tsung was vanquished by Liu Kang, who appeared to expunge his timeline from reality. As previously mentioned, Titan Havik examined the remnants of the battle and hinted at provoking the next conflict. Contrasting this, Khaos Reigns begins with Bi-Han, the current Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei and known as Sub-Zero in this timeline, disrupting his younger brother Scorpion’s wedding to Harumi. The latter founded Shirai Ryu following the events of the base game and was preparing for marriage with his fiancee.

In this battle scenario, Sub-Zero enlists Sektor and Cyrax as his comrades. Notably, Cyrax employs the advanced cybernetic suits from the Lin Kuei order. However, once Cyrax discovers that Bi-Han had deceived her about her brother, she switches allegiances to Scorpion and Liu Kang. Consequently, Sub-Zero and Sektor are overpowered and detained for trial by Empress Mileena of Edenia.

In an attempt to move past past disagreements, Liu Kang and his companions unexpectedly find themselves under attack by Titan Havik and soldiers from the Khaosrealm. With the Kamidogu in hand, Havik plans to utilize Geras’s time crystals to merge all timelines, resulting in a state of utter chaos – one where Havik ironically maintains control at the top. Geras is apprehended with Sub-Zero hot on his heels, but he doesn’t escape for long as he’s quickly captured.

Because Liu Kang refuses to leave his timeline undefended, Cyrax, Scorpion, and reluctant Sektor embark on a mission to rescue Bi-Han and Geras. Khaosrealm is an intriguing location as it hosts refugees from other timelines, such as Emperor Rain and Empress Tanya. Trapped in the Khaoseum (the same place shown in the trailer with multiple Havik versions), Empress Tanya fights for her survival. Consequently, the trio, along with Emperor Rain, travel to the arena where they engage in battles against other variants before Titan Havik leads them into a labyrinth.

As Rain makes the ultimate sacrifice for their safety, they encounter a character from Mortal Kombat: Armageddon named Orin’s variant, who assists Taven, the main character. This variant aids them by transporting the group into Havik’s Citadel, where Geras and Bi-Han are imprisoned. Regrettably, Bi-Han has been altered into Noob Saibot due to Titan Havik’s experiments with chaos magic. Amusingly, they manage to subdue him, bringing along Geras, the Kamidogu artifacts, and Noob Saibot as they journey back to their timeline.

Liu Kang spends his time nursing Bi-Han back to health, yet fails to reverse the destructive magic. Fortunately, Bi-Han’s mind remains sharp, and he joins the ranks of the righteous using his newly acquired shadowy abilities. In due course, Titan Havik shows up with his troops, retrieves the Kamidogu, and gains strength. Despite this and creating numerous Havik duplicates to keep Liu Kang’s forces occupied, he ultimately meets his match at the hands of Noob Saibot, who reduces him to a limbless, bleeding wreck.

Prior to delivering the final strike, Liu Kang steps in, reluctant to kill Titan Havik as it may cause harm to his timeline’s inhabitants. Bi-Han reacts as one might expect, and after a brief exchange, he prepares to engage Liu Kang in combat…until Geras abruptly stops him in time. To clarify, Sub-Zero/Noob Saibot endures four embarrassing defeats during the expansion.

In a new turn of events, Sektor resumes his role as Grandmaster within the Lin Kuei, while Liu Kang retains Bi-Han at the Temple of Elements for rehabilitation. Simultaneously, Cyrax receives an enticing offer from Kuai Liang to join the Shirai Ryu.

After finishing the storylines in Arcade Mode for each fresh character, we discover an additional detail: Bi-Han is saved by Sektor, who journeyed into the Temple of Elements to get an Amulet for Quan Chi. This doesn’t cover all the details, though.

In the story, she uncovers Noob Saibot and, believing that Liu Kang left him rather than helping him heal, sets him free to exact revenge. Meanwhile, Bi-Han remains calm about his newfound abilities. The narrative unfolds with a fresh confrontation between the Lin Kuei and Liu Kang’s troops. In this clash, Noob Saibot’s powers prove too strong for Liu Kang’s forces, leading to the apparent demise of Geras and Kung Lao.

While Cyrax is now part of the Shirai Ryu, there’s still animosity towards her due to her past actions at Scorpion’s wedding. Despite this, internal conflicts arise, but eventually, they decide to give her an opportunity to show her worth and earn their trust.

Regardless of the setbacks it encountered during its growth phase, the game Khaos Reigns effectively develops Noob Saibot as a potential future main antagonist. This unexpected turn is intriguing given his subservient role in other games, and he appears to be a formidable adversary for Liu Kang. The question remains: Will NetherRealm Studios delay another year before releasing a new story expansion to further explore this development? Only time will provide the answer.

For now, it’s unclear what will happen to the Kamidogu. Titan Havik appears to have gone back to his own time, but we can’t predict how this will affect future events. It’s unlikely that he’ll accept defeat quietly, given his history of causing turmoil across various timelines. Liu Kang might find it hard to let him go, considering the havoc Titan Shang Tsung wreaked and Havik’s own destructive actions. As for Orin, will she step up in future events or stay in the Khaosrealm, perhaps dealing with the repercussions of her decisions?

It appears that the storyline in Khaos Reigns suggests a change for NetherRealm, as it seems they might be focusing more on conflicts within a single timeline instead of venturing into multiple universes. However, it remains unclear how they will balance this approach, where most significant events occur in expansions, with Invasions, which are purely inter-universe battles and ultimately have little long-term impact.

It’s possible that the subplot featuring Quan Chi could resurface, with Noob Saibot pursuing the Kamidogu on his own terms. After obtaining the Amulet’s power, he might align himself with Shinnok. If Noob Saibot becomes a threat to Liu Kang, it could fall upon Scorpion and the Shirai Ryu to confront him, potentially setting up another fated encounter between the clans.

For now, the narrative continues strongly in “Khaos Reigns,” introducing fresh characters and further complicating events. It’s not another grand, multi-timeline battle like the climax of the original game, but considering the series’ history, perhaps this change is beneficial.
