Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Review – Recognize Me, Little Brother?

As a long-time fan of Mortal Kombat since its early days, I have to say that Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns has managed to keep the spirit of the series alive and well. The return of Animalities, a feature we haven’t seen in almost three decades, was a delightful surprise and a testament to NetherRealm Studios’ commitment to their fans.

About a year has passed since the launch of Mortal Kombat 1, and NetherRealm Studios have consistently provided updates to the game, including seasonal and roster changes, although there have been some issues like expensive microtransactions in the in-game store. I’ve enjoyed playing Mortal Kombat 1 multiple times since last year due to its impressive roster and engaging fighting mechanics. With the release of the expansion, Khaos Reigns, players should anticipate more of what they already love about the game, as well as additional features. Right?

The main appeal of “Khaos Reigns” lies in its intricate storyline centered around Havik, where he, along with his group of madmen, disrupt the game’s timeline to seize control using Kamidogu, ancient relics, and time crystals by capturing Geras. As a result, an uncomfortable truce forms between good and evil as the main characters venture into Havik’s realm to thwart his malicious schemes. This storyline delivers the grandiose action typical of a “Mortal Kombat” campaign, featuring well-crafted cutscenes and impressive voice acting.

In the game “Khaos Reigns”, there are prolonged stretches where the player controls only one character, which can lead to pacing problems.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve jumped into the latest campaign and found myself reacquainted with fan favorites Cyrax and Sektor. Their dynamic in the old timeline was intriguing to say the least, but their introduction in Khaos Reigns falls flat for me.

In “Khaos Reigns”, there’s an issue with the game’s rhythm, as players are often left controlling just one character for long stretches. It might be helpful to know that since the series was rebooted in 2011, the campaigns have been structured chapter-wise, with each chapter spotlighting a single character. However, the balance in pacing was lost in “Khaos Reigns”, as it seems to concentrate too much on a select group of characters, making some feel overly prolonged by the game’s end. Although I appreciate their effort to deepen a particular character’s storyline within the lore, many players might find these sections excessively lengthy.

Among my feelings of disappointment due to the shallow portrayal of relationship dynamics between Sektor and Cyrax, it’s evident that Havik and Noob Saibot are the standout characters in this series. The actor portraying Havik has delivered an outstanding performance, showcasing the character’s insanity and peculiar actions throughout the game. The intriguing blend of Havik dismembering his own body and casually dropping witty comments kept me hooked on uncovering the fate of this madman. Noob Saibot also boasts a compelling narrative, with his unexpected alliance changes towards the end of the game. I’m eager to see how NetherRealm Studios will further develop Noob Saibot’s character, as it seems that he will have a more significant role in the future.

“This is the Noob Saibot you know and love: fast, brutal, and evil.”

Regrettably, the game “Khaos Reigns” concludes rather swiftly, lasting approximately two to three hours. The main storyline doesn’t offer much post-completion content, unlike the final chapter of the base game that allows you to replay it with various characters. Unfortunately, there’s no similar enticement in this installment. However, I did appreciate “Khaos Reigns” campaign, as I believe it’s pushing the series into intriguing new territories. The questionable writing and insufficient emotional connection between Sektor and Cyrax, though, make it a solid effort but one of the weaker campaigns in the series.

In addition to the previously introduced characters Sektor, Cyrax, and Noob Saibot, chaos also introduces six new playable characters: Ghostface, T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian will join later, while their movesets differ significantly from their former selves as they are not cyborgs in this timeline, leading to more earthbound abilities.

Contrarily, Noob Saibot stands out with his move set based on shadows and an arsenal of Fatalities that are sure to bring a grin to your face. He is the familiar Noob Saibot we adore: swift, merciless, and wicked. As for the guest characters, I can’t comment much since they haven’t been released yet. However, considering the developer’s past success with DLC additions, it’s reasonable to expect that the upcoming characters in “Khaos Reigns” will be thrilling newcomers to the roster.

“To pack it up, Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns continues the intense drama of the base game.”

In the latest installment of the series, after being absent for nearly three decades, Animalities have made their comeback. Last seen in Mortal Kombat Trilogy, they are now back and as gruesome as ever. General Shao can morph into a bear ready to shred you to pieces, while Geras can transform into a hippopotamus capable of grinding you to dust. One particularly impressive Animality is Noob Saibot’s, where he metamorphoses into two alligators tearing his enemy in half. For long-time fans like myself, it was wonderful to witness these transformations optimized for contemporary gaming systems. It would have been easy to monetize these changes through microtransactions, but it’s delightful that all Animalities are free add-ons for everyone to enjoy.

The sequel to Mortal Kombat 1, titled “Khaos Reigns,” carries forward the intense narrative of the original game. This story should appeal particularly to dedicated fans, although it may not rank among the series’ best. Among the new characters, Havik and Noob Saibot stand out, leaving us intrigued about Noob Saibot’s destiny in upcoming content updates. The return of Animalties, now free, makes for a thrilling enhancement to an already immersive combat system. In essence, “Mortal Kombat: Khaos Reigns” is essentially more of the same Mortal Kombat – brutal, graphic, and an unadulterated adrenaline rush; what else could one desire?

This game was reviewed on the PlayStation 5.
