Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Trailer Analysis – What is Even Going On?

As a long-time fan of Mortal Kombat, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns in the lore of this iconic game. But the latest developments in the story have left me utterly astounded! The idea of multiple timelines merging, the One Being making its return, and Onaga waiting in the wings – it all seems too grandiose, even for a series known for its epic battles and intricate narratives.

At long last, NetherRealm Studios unveiled the narrative expansion for “Mortal Kombat 1” titled “Khaos Reigns,” set to drop on September 24th. In this new chapter, Havik (not from the present-day storyline) gathers allies and confronts Liu Kang in an epic battle. Sektor, Cyrax, and Noob Saibot have made their appearances, and the world seems to be spiraling into disorder. The Forces of Light appear to face a formidable struggle.

According to the teaser video for Mortal Kombat 1’s storyline, there are many intriguing aspects that need further exploration. (Caution: This discussion may contain spoilers for Mortal Kombat 1’s campaign as well as some earlier installments, so please exercise caution if you do not wish to be informed.)

1. After the dramatic ending involving Titans Shang Tsung and Quan-Chi, another Titan, Havik, appears on the scene, examining the aftermath of the battle. Accompanying him are alternate versions of Tanya, Quan- Chi, and Kenshi. Hungry for more destruction, Havik hints that the next fight won’t be so easily resolved. Much like his fellow Titans, Havik is a version of the character who overpowered Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11 and took possession of the Hourglass. Since then, it remains unclear what he has been doing, but the trailer suggests that he has amassed additional power sources.

As I step into the arena, my eyes widen at the sight of dozens of Haviks before me, mirroring the swarm of Kangs in the post-credits scene from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It feels like I’ve been building towards this moment for a while now, gathering allies who share my ambition – myself included.

Liu Kang may need to rely on his adversaries for the New Era’s salvation, hinting at a potential alliance with his enemy Shang Tsung. This alignment fits the theme as Liu Kang symbolizes life while Shang Tsung embodies death. However, the situation might not be so simple, as Havik, representing chaos, could pose the greatest danger to the natural order.

Liu Kang might join forces with villainous Titan versions of his past adversaries, such as Shao Kahn and possibly Goro. Likewise, it’s not unthinkable that Havik, the solitary heroic figure from Mortal Kombat 1 who can be picked for the final battle, could switch sides and team up with the Forces of Light to confront his Titan counterpart.

It’s worth pondering: Just how big of a danger is Titan Havik, truly? While he wreaks havoc and instills fear with his troops, it’s important to remember that Liu Kang has successfully defeated not one but two Titans in the past. A wildcard in this situation could be the six mysterious stones embedded within Titan Havik’s chest. Their true nature remains unknown, but they bear a striking resemblance to the Kamidogu.

Back in Mortal Kombat: Deception, I came across six mystical relics, each carrying the core energy of their respective realms and packing an insane punch. These artifacts were instrumental in reviving Onaga, the fearsome Dragon King of Outworld. Shinnok’s Amulet held the secret to combining them into the One Kamidogu.

As a devoted fan, I’d describe it this way: When the One Realm came to be, all distinct realms merged into one glorious entity. The Elder Gods met their demise during this process. In the midst of it all, Onaga underwent a remarkable transformation, becoming the omnipotent being who orchestrated the creation of every realm. The Elder Gods managed to defeat him, but in doing so, they fragmented his essence into the sacred Kamidogu artifacts. This creator deity has since appeared to guide figures like Onaga and Shao Kahn as they wage wars between realms.

1st Timeline: Initially, the Kamidogu remained untouched. In the subsequent timeline, these artifacts transformed into daggers, as depicted in the Mortal Kombat X comic book series. Despite being linked to Blood Magic, they preserve the One Being’s spirit. Havik aimed to collect them all for a ritual to reclaim Shinnok’s Amulet, intending to make the champions of every realm his mind-controlled subjects. However, he was prevented from entering NetherRealm by Takeda, then Scorpion, who sent him to the Gates of Hell instead (where Quan-Chi later punished him for his failure in retrieving the Amulet).

In simple terms, the One Being isn’t going away for good. We caught a glimpse of it in Shinnok’s ending in “Mortal Kombat X,” where it destroyed all existence after merging the realms. However, there are also mentions of it throughout the storyline of “Mortal Kombat 11,” even if it doesn’t have a significant impact on the current events.

1. In the narrative of “Khaos Reigns”, Titan Havik acquires the Kamidogu he’s carrying. The story might involve him gathering the Kamidogu appropriate for the current timeline. While battling Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Raiden, his combat attire hides most of his chest, but there are no stones embedded on the right side. On the other hand, it’s assumed that the Amulet of Shinnok remains with Liu Kang following their confrontation over it from General Shao. It’s unclear if this amulet still serves as a means to combine the Kamidogu, but given the significance of such an artifact, it seems improbable that it would be left unexplored in the storyline.

1. Amidst all the ongoing events, Onaga remains an unpredictable factor. At present, he is confined within Mount Tsaagan, retaining his immense power despite being imprisoned. In Reiko’s ending scenario, General Shao arranges for Onaga’s release as part of a strategy to seize Outworld from Mileena. If successful, Onaga could bring devastation to all the realms or, alternatively, he might follow the original timeline’s version by gathering the Kamidogu once more, potentially reforming the One Kamidogu for ultimate power.

1. Presuming Kamidogu and Onaga are part of the scenario, the risks would significantly escalate beyond the standard game. Could Titan Havik manage to assemble them all and harness their power to dismantle every realm? But what if Onaga initially isn’t an adversary but teams up with Liu Kang and the Forces of Light to counteract the Titan, only later claiming the power for himself? What are the Elder Gods’ thoughts on this situation, and will they play a part in the events that unfold? If the One Being reappears, signaling its return in a video game, how will our protagonists handle its menace? Might even the Titans from multiple realities withstand such a threat?

As someone who has been a devoted fan of Mortal Kombat since the early 90s, I have to admit that the lore behind the game’s characters always intrigued me the most. And let me tell you, the relationship between Bi-Han and Havik is one of those intriguing stories.

As a gamer, I can tell you that Sektor and Cyrax are intriguing characters in their own right. Sektor is deeply loyal to Bi-Han, but his devotion might not align with Titan Havik’s plans. It could just be a friendly sparring match or a way for him to let off some steam. However, I have a feeling that Sektor may hold reservations about Bi-Han’s current path or even question if all of this will truly benefit the clan. Cyrax, on the other hand, comes from the Zaki sub-clan and has a more impulsive personality. During one scene, we see them in combat, but it could also be just a friendly match. Nevertheless, there’s a chance that Sektor may not share Havik’s perspective on things.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but be intrigued by the unexpected turn of events in the Mortal Kombat universe. It may sound unbelievable that Onaga, the Kamidogu, the One Being, is back and causing chaos across multiple timelines and bringing the Titans into the fray. Who would have thought that after the intense war portrayed in MK11, we’d be witnessing another battle of epic proportions? It’s clear that NetherRealm Studios isn’t holding back when it comes to raising the stakes for this reboot. The future direction of the story remains a mystery, but I, for one, am excited to see where they take us next!
