As a longtime Mortal Kombat fanatic who has weathered through countless tournaments, upgrades, and controversies, the latest rumors about quick-time events (QTEs) making a comeback in the upcoming Khaos Reigns expansion have me both excited and apprehensive.
Players of Mortal Kombat 1 are eagerly anticipating the upcoming expansion called Khaos Reigns, which is rumored to introduce new game modes, story content, and fighters. If the rumors are true, there might be an additional feature in Khaos Reigns: quick-time events. This feature has been hinted at in some of the trailers for Khaos Reigns, but NetherRealm Studios hasn’t officially confirmed it yet. Some players may have mixed feelings about this potential addition since they have differing opinions on quick-time events.
Twitter user and YouTuber TrueUnderDawg shared a comparison video recently that looked at two moments from different Khaos Reigns previews. Both involve Scorpion and Noob Saibot, the latter being one of the new fighters returning in the expansion, but the scene plays out differently despite starting the same. In one version of the scene, Scorpion pulls out his kunai and flings it at Noob Saibot who gracefully dodges it with a slow-motion flip. In another version shown at the end of the video, the kunai instead pierces Noob Saibot’s hand.
The two versions of what seems to be identical scenes within the game “Khaos Reigns” have sparked speculation among players that Quick Time Events (QTEs) could make a return. While they were present, to some extent, in Mortal Kombat 1 through features like Test Your Might in Invasion mode, they differ from the pass/fail QTEs we’ve encountered in previous Mortal Kombat games such as Mortal Kombat X.
Did you spot the quick time event?!

It seems people aren’t entirely convinced about the return of Quick Time Events (QTEs) since NetherRealm hasn’t explicitly confirmed or denied it. Some argue that what appears to be a QTE might just be Scorpion throwing his kunai twice in one encounter with Noob Saibot. However, the windup motion for Scorpion pulling out his kunai looks very similar in both instances, making it hard to believe that Noob Saibot would dodge the kunai once and then get hit by it in the next moment without any difficulty. The evidence doesn’t necessarily prove the return of QTEs, but neither does it definitively disprove them.
For those who want to compare the scenes for yourselves, the “pass” version of the scene is shown in the official Khaos Reigns trailer while the “fail” version is in Noob Saibot’s gameplay showcase.
Players of Mortal Kombat 1 have a feeling that the Khaos Reigns DLC might contain more features than initially suggested. A leaker from the Mortal Kombat community recently hinted at the inclusion of two modes within Khaos Reigns, which was not mentioned in any previous DLC announcements by NetherRealm. Shortly after this revelation, an article on Xbox Wire by Xbox itself confirmed “new modes” as part of the DLC. If additional modes could be hidden in Khaos Reigns without being explicitly discussed by NetherRealm, it’s possible that Quick-Time Events (QTEs) could also be included.
On September 24th, it will be revealed whether Quick Time Events (QTEs) make a comeback in Mortal Kombat 1. We’ll find out then, or possibly earlier.
