Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Shutting Down Barely 1 Year After Release

As a long-time fan of Mortal Kombat, I was devastated to hear that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, the mobile game, is being shut down later this year. I’ve been following the game since its release in October 2023 and have really enjoyed playing it, especially with the added bonus of the Sub-Zero announer voice which I unlocked by linking my WB Games account and reaching level 20.

The game “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught,” which became available in October 2023, is set to be discontinued. Its developers have announced that it will no longer function as of October, and from July 22nd onwards, it won’t be downloadable anymore. Fans of Mortal Kombat who wish to experience the game before its demise should act swiftly and download it via the App Store or Google Play without delay if they haven’t already done so. In anticipation of the removal from digital stores, the official X/Twitter account shared a few key dates for players to remember.

“Beginning on October 21, 2024, access to ‘Mortal Kombat: Onslaught‘ will no longer be available. The game will be officially taken down from both the App Store and Google Play on July 22, 2024. In-app purchases will then cease on August 23, 2024. Until that time, you are invited to savor your gaming experience with us.”

Mortal Kombat fans expressed disappointment and frustration upon hearing the news that “Onslaught” would be discontinued. While some players were content with the current version, others lamented over the loss of a beloved digital game. This is unfortunately a common issue with digital media – once it disappears, there’s no going back to revisit previous enjoyments. Mobile games are particularly susceptible to this, even those based on established franchises like “Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier,” which was also shut down after a year. It remains uncertain if the termination of “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught” is related to recent layoffs at NetherRealm Studios. If audience engagement was weak, it could have been a cost-cutting measure for the company.

Fans are left with many unresolved queries regarding the closure of “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.” One intriguing question revolves around how NetherRealm will deal with the Sub-Zero announcer voice. In the original Mortal Kombat game, this voice was a reward for players who linked their WB Games account with Onslaught and reached level 20. With the game being discontinued, this bonus content may be lost unless NetherRealm finds a solution. Possibilities include making it free DLC for all Mortal Kombat 1 players or incorporating it into the next Kombat Pack. However, until an official announcement is made, the mobile version of the game remains the only way to access this content.
