As a seasoned explorer of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and a long-time follower of the Stalker series, I must say that the choices presented in S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 are as intriguing as they are daunting. With each decision potentially altering the course of the game, it’s like navigating a minefield – one wrong step and you’re doomed!
Following a painstakingly lengthy wait, the much-anticipated S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chornobyl has made its grand entrance, welcoming old and new adventurers to The Zone. Throughout its gameplay, S.T.A.L.K.E.R consistently offers a plethora of missions and tasks, scattered across The Zone, to aid players in their struggle against the harshness it presents.
The game series consistently provides players with immense flexibility, enabling them to perform various actions at will and choose as they please. Unsurprisingly, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 maintains this trend, offering a variety of choices for the player throughout both main missions and side quests. These decisions can prove instrumental for upcoming tasks, save time and effort, or significantly impact the overall narrative, even determining the ending the player experiences. Hence, these choices carry great weight.
Spoilers ahead for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl!
6. Shoot Or Knock Out Solder
An Early Choice That Can Determine A Future Mission
- Found during the Behind Seven Seals mission
- A smaller decision that can determine the ease of an upcoming mission
During the initial stages of gameplay, players encounter several decisions to make. One significant choice involves deciding whether to spare or eliminate Soldier in the “Behind Seven Seals” mission.
The decision may not show its impact right away, but it could shape the outcome of future operations, particularly in the mission known as “The Hornet’s Nest.” Opting to keep Soldier alive could spare you some inconvenience during that later mission. However, neither choice alters anything else in the grand scheme.
5. Show The Unusual PDA
A Choice That Can Make Future Interactions Easier
- Found during the Back to Slag Heap mission
- A smaller choice that can help with future missions
In my perspective, flaunting this uncommon PDA may not be a pivotal decision that alters the narrative significantly, but it could prove beneficial for future missions. During the “Return to Slag Heap” mission, you’ll encounter a situation where you can either present this peculiar device to Colonel Korshunov and Doctor Dalin or choose to keep it concealed.
By opting to display the uncommon Public Display of Affection (PDA), players will earn the Ward Badge, a helpful item for upcoming missions. Furthermore, they’ll acquire a distinctive weapon known as the Combatant. Conversely, if players choose not to show the uncommon PDA, they’ll be compelled to finish the mission titled “A Heavy Burden.” In this particular mission, players get to decide whether or not to reveal the uncommon PDA to Scar. Regardless of the choice, both scenarios lead to the unlocking of the mentioned mission and some dialogue variations.
4. Kill Shah, Roosevelt, Or Varan
One Of The First Tricky Choices Players Will Encounter
- Found during the Deal with the Devil and/or King of the Hill mission
- One of the first big choices that can have difficult outcomes
In the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, The Zone isn’t a welcoming environment, and it shows in some of its challenging decisions. One such early choice may leave players pondering their actions, centered around Varan and his demand: either eliminate Roosevelt or Shah, or part with 20,000 coupons. For seasoned franchise veterans, this decision could be particularly tough, or straightforward depending on the player’s faction loyalty, as Roosevelt is associated with Duty, whereas Shah hails from Freedom.
Choosing to eliminate Varan comes with its own set of advantages, since he will always betray you regardless of your decision. However, be aware that this path may require dealing with more adversaries. In the scenario where Roosevelt can be encountered again in a future mission, his death makes peaceful resolution impossible. Meanwhile, killing Shah results in losing access to the Brood.
3. Eternal Spring Or Life Is For The Living
An Important Choice That Can Influence The Ending
- Found during the Subtle Matter mission
- A choice that can give players the Spark ending
Stepping into the shoes of a critic, I must say that as a longtime fan, it was unclear if the past protagonists would reappear in The Zone since it had been over a decade since the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R game. However, my doubts were laid to rest upon encountering the Spark faction, where I discovered Scar – the central character from S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky. This enigmatic journey back into The Zone proved to be a thrilling experience, rekindling the excitement that first drew me in over a decade ago.
In the narrative of S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, Scar and his freshly formed group have a distinct conclusion that sets them apart from others in the game. A pivotal moment for reaching this ending occurs during the ‘Subtle Matter’ mission, where players are faced with two options: either ‘Life is for the living’, or ‘Eternal Spring’. Opting for ‘Eternal Spring’ leads players towards the Spark conclusion, whereas selecting ‘Life is for the living’ opens up the possibility of exploring any other endings.
2. I’m Not Your Enemy Or Escape
A Choice That Can Allow A Specific Ending
- Found during the Dangerous Liaisons mission
- A choice that can give players the Ward ending
The game series known as S.T.A.L.K.E.R has consistently placed great importance on its factions, and with the arrival of S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, it’s added fresh elements to the franchise. So, it’s not shocking at all that one of these new factions, namely the Ward, offers a distinctive conclusion.
In the climactic mission named “Dangerous Liaisons,” the player encounters Korshunov who presents them with a crucial decision: either declare that they are not hostile towards the Ward or opt for an exit from the current predicament. Picking the first option will lead the players to the Ward’s ending, whereas choosing the latter gives them the freedom to explore other endings as desired.
1. Lower The Gun Or Fire
A Choice That Will Decide The Ending Of The Game
- Found during The Last Wish mission
- A crucial decision that can give players the Strelok or Kaymanov ending.
Among the familiar faces returning in S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, Strelok, who has been a part of every game in the series up to now, is the one we are most eagerly anticipating. Given his significant role within the S.T.A.L.K.E.R universe, it seems only fitting that he should have a conclusion tied to him in S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2.
In The Last Wish mission, the decision to shoot Kaymanov or choose not to do so has consequences. Shooting him leads to the Strelok ending, while opting not to shoot and lowering the gun instead will unlock the Kaymanov ending.
