Most-watched Christmas TV shows confirmed – Gavin & Stacey, Wallace & Gromit and more ranked

As a movie buff, I’ve just gotten my hands on the complete rundown for 2024’s holiday TV ratings. It seems that when it comes to the most captivating shows, Gavin & Stacey, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, and Call the Midwife have stolen the spotlight this festive season!

In the last week following its release, more than 19 million people tuned in to watch the final episode of Gavin & Stacey, and over 16 million viewers watched Wallace & Gromit during the same period.

On Christmas Day, episodes of “Call the Midwife” and “Outnumbered’s” holiday special each attracted more than 7 million viewers, with “Call the Midwife” placing third and “Outnumbered” fourth. The second episode of “Call the Midwife,” however, managed to pull in 6.5 million viewers.

Here are the final ten spots:

1. The Doctor Who Christmas special scored 6.9 million views.
2. The King’s Christmas broadcast followed closely behind with 5.6 million viewers.
3. The second EastEnders Christmas Day episode ranked seventh with 5.5 million.
4. The first EastEnders Christmas Day episode was just a hair behind, taking the eighth spot with 5.4 million views.
5. Lastly, the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special rounded out the top ten with 5.3 million.

Notably, all of the top 10 programmes were aired on BBC One.

Moving further along the list, shows like Beyond Paradise, The Split, Strike, and Tiddler were additionally recognized by the BBC. However, only ITV’s The 1% Club and Coronation Street, as well as Netflix’s Squid Game, managed to crack the top 20 from other networks.

It is known that the finale of Gavin & Stacey surpassed all other scripted shows on television and streaming platforms in the UK since records began in 2002, as confirmed by the BBC. This impressive feat even outdid the show’s previous record from the 2019 Christmas special, which garnered 18.5 million viewers within a 28-day period.

According to the announcer, we’re expecting the final episode to surpass 20 million views within the next 28 days.

This year was notable for big returning shows, with Outnumbered also receiving high viewership.

The long-running series Gavin & Stacey, created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, has officially concluded, but the makers of Outnumbered remain open to possible reunions featuring the Brockman family in the future.
