- Stardock released a major update to DesktopGPT that adds support for GPT-4o and GPT 40-Mini.
- The update also lets you use your own API key if you already pay for a premium tier of OpenAI.
- DesktopGPT is a new app from Stardock that lets you access AI with a keystroke and choose between which model you’d like to use.
As an observer with over two decades of tech industry experience under my belt, I must say that the rapid integration of AI into our daily lives is both fascinating and slightly overwhelming. In my early days in this field, AI was a distant dream, confined to the pages of sci-fi novels and academic journals. Today, it’s as common as the smartphone in our pockets or the computer on our desks.
As time passes, Windows 11 becomes more intertwined with artificial intelligence, with Microsoft Copilot now residing in the taskbar and an increasing array of Microsoft services incorporating AI by 2024. However, it’s important to note that Microsoft isn’t the only tech company innovating in this area. In fact, other companies like Stardock have also developed ways to bring AI directly to your desktop. One such example is DesktopGPT, which enables you to summon AI with a simple keystroke, and it has recently undergone a significant update.
As an enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the newest edition of my favorite tool, DesktopGPT, now boasts support for OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini! However, what truly sets this update apart is the introduction of a premium tier option from OpenAI, which grants users the ability to integrate their own API key. Once you’ve upgraded, DesktopGPT will tap into your available credits to execute tasks on your behalf.
Improving certain aspects of user experience can enhance the performance of DesktopGPT too. For instance, setting the default hotkey for the app to Ctrl + Alt + O and allowing users to view their history by pressing Alt + H. Additionally, a helpful feature is that pressing F1 while using the app will display all the shortcuts available within DesktopGPT.
Stardock has incorporated the ability to use Markdown within the chat interface when interacting with DesktopGPT.
How to get DesktopGPT
Initially, DesktopGPT was developed as an internal tool for improving AI-related tasks at Stardock. Later, they enhanced it and made it available to the general public as an application. According to Brad Sams, Stardock’s Software GM, “DesktopGPT represents the advancement of a tool that we used internally at Stardock to boost our efficiency in AI interactions.” At its core, DesktopGPT includes templates designed to simplify your frequent tasks by automating them.
Currently, you can utilize DesktopGPT by acquiring the Object Desktop package, which typically retails for $49.99; however, it may sometimes go on sale.
Copilot vs GPT
Microsoft and OpenAI share an intriguing dynamic, as they are simultaneously collaborative allies and rival competitors. Microsoft’s Copilot leverages technology from OpenAI, while the very same OpenAI technology depends on Microsoft Azure. Moreover, Microsoft holds the position of OpenAI’s largest investor, having poured billions of dollars into the company.
The partnership or association between Microsoft and OpenAI might not concern either party, as long as both entities continue to experience steady growth. However, there are concerns regarding the future of AI, particularly for OpenAI. ChatGPT has surpassed 200 million weekly active users, but OpenAI is reportedly facing financial difficulties, with forecasts predicting a loss of $5 billion in 2024. Given its current predicament, OpenAI might have to seek assistance from its competitor, partner, or investor – Microsoft. It’s rumored that Microsoft, along with Apple and NVIDIA, are prepared to provide additional funding to help OpenAI navigate through this challenging period.
Several questions surround AI at the moment, including if the tech can be financially viable for all parties involved. High electricity and water consumption are also key concerns. Several studies have warned of AI projects being abandoned in the future. We’ll have to see what’s in the cards for OpenAI and Microsoft in the AI space. For now, there are several ways to bring up tools powered by those companies on the Windows 11 desktop.
