The creators of Mr. Bates versus The Post Office expressed their hope that a follow-up isn’t necessary, as they once again urged fairness and justice for the subpostmasters portrayed in the series.
During the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises, executive producer Patrick Spence and writer Gwyneth Hughes shared their thoughts at the winners press conference. When asked about their show winning the award for Limited Drama, Spence responded, “We’ve contributed to something special.
He went on to say: “We held the torch for a while, but it’s crucial that [the media] disseminate the information about unpaid wages. This situation is not resolved, they are entangled in bureaucracy, and it’s unfair. So, we kindly ask you, avoid creating another scene, share this message – and let them know.
“There are still people in abject poverty waiting for fair compensation.”
Hughes expressed her belief that our victory tonight significantly boosts the cause, as she anticipates it will bring renewed focus and support to our ongoing battle for justice.
This predicament is quite intricate – there are multiple compensation systems in play, each entangled within distinct sectors of our government. It appears that everyone involved is left in the dark about the current status.
However, the primary figures involved haven’t yet received their pay or compensation. After all, this production has been ongoing for a quarter of a century now. Consequently, if we find ourselves celebrated on the headlines tomorrow with our awards, that undeniably brings attention back to our project and encourages people to participate.
She concluded: “I really hope that it helps, that would make all this worthwhile.”
The play “Mr. Bates vs The Post Office” showcased the infamous British Post Office scandal, a tragic instance of injustice where numerous subpostmasters were falsely accused and punished for offenses like theft, dishonest accounting, or fraud – all due to the flawed post office computer system.
