Mr Loverman trailer gives first look at Line of Duty star in heartfelt adaptation

As a movie reviewer who’s spent a good part of my life traversing the silver screen, I’ve seen my fair share of love stories – from Romeo and Juliet to Jack and Rose. But Mr Loverman, based on Bernardine Evaristo’s novel, seems to be stepping into a new realm entirely.

The upcoming BBC adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s Mr Loverman, set to release later this month, has just revealed its first trailer, offering a sneak peek into the emotional narrative it promises.

In this show, Lennie James, known for his roles in Line of Duty and The Walking Dead, portrays Barry, a 74-year-old man originally from Antigua who resides in Hackney. His wife, Carmel, played by Sharon D Clarke (Doctor Who, Holby City), suspects that he has been unfaithful to her with other women.

In reality, over the course of several decades, he was unfaithful to her; however, this betrayal wasn’t with just anyone – it was with his closest companion and true love, Morris, portrayed skillfully by Ariyon Bakare, who you might recognize from His Dark Materials and Good Omens.

In the trailer we see Barry refuse to call himself homosexual, instead saying he is a “Barry-sexual”. Morris says he’s a cheat, but Barry retorts that it’s not in the way Carmel thinks.

You can watch the trailer right here now.

The story unfolds with Barry confronting the last stage of his existence, requiring significant decisions that may compel his entire family to ponder their own destinies.

The main group is joined by actors like Tamara Lawrance (from Time), Sharlene Whyte (known for Sherwood), and Tahj Miles (familiar from Death in Paradise) in this series as well.

Actors such as Suzette Llewellyn (from EastEnders), Lochlann Ó Mearáin (Outlander), Hopi Grace (Boiling Point), Llewella Gideon (Top Boy), Doreene Blackstock (Sex Education), Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (The Split), Juliet Garricks (Murder They Hope) and Clint Dyer (Black Mirror) will be featured in various parts of the show.

Initially announcing the series, Lennie James shared his excitement saying, “I can hardly wait to bring Barrington’s charisma to life and contribute to telling this essential yet complex tale of love. It’s both humorous and tragic. Filled with emotion as much as it is sorrow…

At the same time, screenwriter Nathaniel Price expressed: “As soon as I read Mr. Loverman, I became smitten with Barry, Morris, Carmel, and the entire Walker family. Bernardine’s novel isn’t just a stunningly beautiful and truthful tale brimming with rich characters; it is an essential one.

This work boldly confronts cultural misconceptions and stereotypes, demonstrating the profound and extensive impact of prejudice and apprehension. It has been a great honor and privilege to collaborate with the exceptional team at Fable in bringing these indelible characters to life through our screen adaptation.

Beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, 14th October, every episode of the series Mr Loverman can be streamed on BBC iPlayer. The premiere episodes will also make their television debut on BBC One at 9:00 p.m. that same evening. Subsequent episodes will air weekly thereafter.
