Mr. McMahon Producer Explains Changes Made After Sex Trafficking Lawsuit Came To Light

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of professional wrestling, I can’t help but feel a sense of disillusionment and disappointment upon learning about the allegations against Vince McMahon. Growing up, I was captivated by the larger-than-life personalities and the dramatic storylines that unfolded in the WWE ring. The characters were heroes, villains, and everything in between, and their battles felt epic. But now, as an adult, I can’t help but question the actions of those who played these roles behind the scenes.

This year in January, Janel Grant, a former employee of WWE, filed a lawsuit against Vince McMahon, the ex-chairman of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The lawsuit claims that McMahon and John Laurinaitis, a former head of Talent Relations at WWE, were involved in sexual misconduct and abuse. Although initial accusations were made in 2022 without a named plaintiff, it was only this year that Grant came forward with the lawsuit. Simultaneously, Netflix was filming a documentary about McMahon, giving fans a glimpse into the life of the influential figure who contributed significantly to the multi-billion dollar WWE empire. Known for his reticence, McMahon seldom speaks publicly, and many fans were eager to hear his perspective on the troubled past of WWE.

As the lawsuit broke out, I decided to cancel the remainder of my interviews for the docuseries. The second part of this series delves into Grant’s lawsuit and the accusations leveled against McMahon and the WWE, featuring insights from several key journalists involved in the investigation. Later on, Grant’s attorney, Ann Callis, issued a statement clarifying that Grant had no role in the series, stating she reserved the right to share her own perspective on the matter.

Janel was not involved in the Netflix documentary, but we hope it exposes McMahon’s appalling actions, particularly those occurring on WWE premises, and presents an accurate depiction of his abusive and exploitative conduct. Callis stated that Janel should be given the chance to share her complete narrative, rather than being included in someone else’s. Furthermore, he emphasized that Grant has the freedom to narrate her story whenever she feels ready and in a manner that suits her.

Matt Maxson, producer of the documentary about Mr. McMahon, discussed the transformation the project underwent from its initial announcement in 2018 to the major revelation in 2022. “I received a call around June or July of 2021. I joined a project that had been ongoing since 2018. At that point, it already had two acts completed. Filming didn’t truly start until 2021. I was brought on board quite early. We were dealing with something that, at the time, didn’t have a conclusion,” Maxson shared with Kevin Iole. “It wasn’t the most engaging story yet. It was about a man who had built an empire and, at that point, seemed to be coasting along. We were brainstorming various endings such as ‘Would AEW pose a challenge for him?’ or ‘What other developments might occur?’ We had progressed quite far into production by the end of 2021 and early 2022, and I recall we were reviewing cuts.

Initially, we drafted the first five to six episodes, and I recall sitting down to review them. During this evaluation phase, we provided feedback on various aspects. It was around this time that the initial Wall Street Journal article emerged, causing us to pause and reconsider our entire approach from scratch. This project has been ongoing for a considerable period, and I’ve never experienced one that has felt as extensive as this one. Bill Simmons recalls 14 revisions, but I recall many more than that. It transitioned from feeling stagnant and outdated to being filled with anticipation, constantly checking Twitter to see if new information would surface.

Prior to the airing of the docuseries on Netflix, McMahon issued a statement, labeling it as a “misleading portrayal.
