As a long-time fan of Mrs. Brown’s Boys, I must say I have always admired Brendan O’Carroll’s ability to bring laughter and joy into our homes during the festive season. His character, Agnes Brown, is a true icon and has brought countless hours of entertainment to millions. However, recent events have made me pause and reflect on the importance of responsible humor.
In simpler terms, Brendan O’Carroll, known for his role in Mrs Brown’s Boys, has issued an apology for an inappropriate remark he made while preparing for the Christmas edition of the TV series.
In the play, the actor who embodies the main character, affectionately known as “Mammy” on the show, used humor that seemed to suggest a racial connotation while in his role.
Based on a report from The Mirror, those who witnessed the incident found it offensive and promptly reported it to the BBC. In response, the BBC briefly halted production on their holiday special.
Yesterday, an internal probe concerning the incident concluded, allowing for the resumption of episode production as we speak, and a public apology has been extended by O’Carroll.
According to the comic, during a rehearsal for the Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas episodes, an awkward and insensitive joke involving a racial slur was attempted through the character of Agnes.
“It backfired and caused offence, which I deeply regret and for which I have apologised.”
A representative from the BBC stated: “We don’t speak about specific people, but it’s important to know that the BBC firmly opposes any form of racism. We have strong procedures set up to handle such matters if they should ever occur.
It’s been confirmed that Mrs Brown’s Boys will air another Christmas and New Year special this year. The program has been a regular holiday fixture on the BBC since 2011.
At the National Television Awards 2024, Mrs Brown’s Boys took home the award for Best Comedy. Creator Graham O’Carroll hinted at another season in the future (as reported by The Sun). However, an official confirmation about this upcoming season from the BBC is still pending.
Regarding the next two episodes that hadn’t been scripted during the NTAs, O’Carroll indicated that Mrs Brown’s Christmas would likely be as hectic as always.
“Except this year, I think she’s going to be happy with her Christmas tree.”
Mrs Brown’s Boys returns this Christmas. Stream on BBC iPlayer.
