As a longtime fan and admirer of comic book lore, I must express my unbridled excitement over the potential future of Ms. Marvel! The teaser for her “Second Genesis” in Timeslide #1 has set my heart racing with anticipation.
In the first installment of “Timeslide” by Steve Foxe and Ivan Fiorelli, some intriguing hints for the year 2025 have been unveiled. Cable and Bishop find themselves locked in a struggle against an adversary intent on altering mutant chronicles. Their journey takes them through both past and future timelines as they strive to protect their kin. At one juncture, X-Man Bronze escorts them to view a prophetic list of events, among which lies a significant clue for Ms. Marvel: “Ms. Marvel Second Genesis.” Interestingly, Ms. Marvel is also shown in the comic, and this portrayal correlates with the term “Second Genesis”.
In the 2010s, Ms. Marvel emerged as one of the most significant comic book characters, and her fame has grown significantly since Iman Vellani took on the role in the MCU. Interestingly, Vellani is an ardent fan of Ms. Marvel, having authored several Ms. Marvel comics herself. The portrayal of Ms. Marvel in the MCU has also influenced her comic book counterpart, as it was revealed that she possesses mutant abilities, much like in the MCU. This development seems to be linked to a forthcoming revelation, as “Second Genesis” is a term familiar to X-Men enthusiasts.
Ms. Marvel May Be Heading to the X-Men’s Past
In the opening episode of “Timeslide” #1, Cable and Bishop unexpectedly step into a past where they witness Dark Phoenix clashing with the X-Men. But something unusual catches their attention – Ms. Marvel is fighting alongside the team against Dark Phoenix. It appears that Vacuna, the time-devouring villain they’re tracking, has distorted the timeline, which might be the reason for this peculiar occurrence. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the “Ms. Marvel Second Genesis” hint suggests this incident isn’t as anomalous as it initially seems.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’d like to point out that “Second Genesis” was the title of Giant-Size X-Men #1 from 1974 – a comic book that introduced the team’s second iteration. This team, featuring characters like Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and more, went on to become sales juggernauts and set the stage for the “Dark Phoenix Saga,” where Jean Grey became a vessel for an all-powerful cosmic entity.
Recently, Ms. Marvel has been immersing herself in the X-Men’s world since her revelation of being a mutant. Despite the assumption that she would possess energy powers like those displayed in the MCU, these abilities have yet to manifest in the comics. Her second origin story could potentially introduce these powers, and where better to learn about them than from the X-Men? In an exciting twist, discovering her powers through time travel and learning from the X-Men or their past counterparts would make for a thrilling development in her character.
Since Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) once knew the young Cyclops (Scott Summers) when he was part of the Champions, it wouldn’t be surprising for her to interact with a past version of him, who currently has his memories of her blocked. The X-Men from the Second Genesis era were focused on training and teamwork, making them ideal mentors for Kamala Khan in learning to control her mutant abilities. It makes perfect sense that she’d look to one of her friends for guidance in mastering her powers.
Ms. Marvel in the Past Is a Golden Idea
Ms. Marvel boasts a rich history with various Marvel teams. She’s served as an Avenger, reorganized a teen team called the Champions, collaborated with the Inhumans, and aided the X-Men in their conflicts against Orchis. If her hinted “Second Genesis” returns her to the early days of the X-Men – joining them in their initial battles against adversaries such as the Sentinels, Magneto, and witnessing the Dark Phoenix saga up close – this presents an exceptional chance. As a self-proclaimed superhero enthusiast, experiencing Ms. Marvel’s interactions with the legendary X-Men during their most iconic adventure fits perfectly with her character.
