The popularity of “One Piece” has spread globally due to the original manga by Eiichiro Oda, the anime from Toei Animation, and more recently, the live-action series on Netflix. As the Grand Line gains recognition in everyday conversation, the spheres of animation and sports continue to intertwine. While it’s not a new phenomenon for anime to appear in baseball (MLB), basketball (NBA), or American football (NFL), figures from anime have been present in mixed martial arts, boxing, and other intense sports before. Most recently, a prominent Muay Thai fighter stepped into the ring as a nod to the future pirate king.
Nabil Anane is famously recognized as a skilled Muay Thai combatant, who once held the title of IFMA youth world Muay Thai Champion. In the past, this fighter has openly admitted his fondness for the manga and anime series One Piece, even suggesting that he bears a striking resemblance to its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. Following one of his fights, Anane spoke about their shared characteristics in an interview, “I resemble him. I have long arms and legs. He’s a thief, and yes, I look like him. Notice the scar below my eye? That reminds me of him too. It’s just a character, but it’s intriguing. I’m a fan of One Piece, though I haven’t watched it for some time. So, I plan to rewatch it as I have a deep affection for the series.

Last Sunday, Nabil stepped into the ring sporting a style that was reminiscent of the world-famous straw hat he wore, along with an attire resembling one from the Wano Arc in the popular anime series One Piece. Luffy has had numerous outfit changes throughout his storyline, providing plenty of alternative looks for Anane to emulate if he wishes to recreate other Straw Hat characters’ appearances. This latest instance serves as further evidence that the boundaries between anime and athletics are increasingly blurring as both genres continue to gain immense popularity.

Lately, “One Piece” has collaborated with the Los Angeles Lakers for a unique event where NBA enthusiasts could purchase anime merchandise and also watch an exclusive animation created by Toei to mark the occasion. In the coming month, fans of the Straw Hat crew can anticipate another baseball crossover as “One Piece” hints at a special night with the Seattle Mariners on April 8th.
In an exciting announcement for their anime/sports collaboration, Lisa Yamatoya, Toei Animation’s Senior Director of Global Marketing, expressed her enthusiasm: “We’re looking forward to partnering with the Seattle Mariners for ‘One Piece’ Night in April. We can hardly wait to share this event with both anime and baseball enthusiasts at T-Mobile Park. It promises to be an amazing evening!
