Mufasa: The Lion King’s Tiffany Boone Talks Sarabi’s New Layers (and “Lion Queen” Potential)

As a devoted Disney enthusiast, I was thrilled to delve into the formative years of a legendary royal family through Mufasa: The Lion King. This captivating tale unveiled Mufasa’s early life, showing us how he met Sarabi, encountered Scar for the first time, and ascended to Pride Rock. Tiffany Boone breathed life into the character of Sarabi in this movie, and I was lucky enough to interview Boone about her experience breathing life into an earlier version of this classic character, the profound impact the original film had on her personally, and if she would be open to a Lion Queen sequel.

The Lion King stands among Disney’s greatest timeless classics, yet its significance is particularly profound for Boone, as it held a deeply personal importance during her childhood. Now, she finds herself not just a fan but an integral part of the very franchise that she cherished and felt such a strong emotional bond with.

It’s almost unbelievable, really, to see so many young people responding positively to our film, and we hear from a lot of adults who are moved by it too. It’s incredible to witness so many people being touched by our movie and forming their own connections with this new version of the story. I can hardly believe it myself! I still feel like that little girl who adored the original film when I see all the people from my own generation bringing their kids to watch it. It’s a beautiful thing, and I feel incredibly grateful for the entire experience.

In the movie “Mufasa: The Lion King,” the audience encounters Sarabi even before she crossed paths with Mufasa. To create a well-rounded character, Boone felt it necessary to introduce complexities to Sarabi and subsequently breathe life into those aspects so viewers could follow her development leading up to where we first meet her in the original film.

Boone expressed that it mattered to him for you to observe different facets of her character that aren’t visible in the original portrayal. He explained that he has often felt she was merely a perfect wife, mother, and queen, but viewers don’t get to learn much about her personal narrative.

In this rendition, I aimed to portray a more intricate character of hers. You’ll witness her displaying wit, humor, and experiencing love – all the experiences that shape a young woman into who she eventually becomes. Essentially, I wanted to reveal different aspects of her personality, adding depth to her character. This is what I intended to convey.

Boone admitted to being an ardent admirer of actress Jasmine Guy, who starred in A Different World. When asked if there was a hint of Whitley Gilbert in her portrayal of Sarabi, he chuckled and said, “Not intentionally, but if someone perceived that, then fantastic! Yes, I’m a die-hard fan of The Different World. Jasmine Guy is one of my idols, so any resemblance to her Whitley character would be flattering indeed.

Boone also commented on Jasmine’s outstanding performance in the show Dead Like Me. “Many people might only recognize her from A Different World, but when you watch her in Dead Like Me, it becomes clear what a versatile and exceptional actress she truly is,” he stated.

For the upcoming chapters of this saga, there’s been buzz about a possible sequel titled “The Lion Queen”. This new installment would focus on Sarabi’s life and adventures if given another chance to delve into this universe, and Boone is eagerly ready for it, even brainstorming potential plotlines for both Sarabi’s tale and the larger narrative.

Boone expressed his enthusiasm by saying, “Absolutely! I can’t imagine anyone turning down such an opportunity. It’s intriguing to think about the story between The Lion King 1 and the original movie, sort of like a sequel to The Lion Queen. I’d love to explore how she rises to become a queen, how her subjects adjust to their new surroundings, and how she evolves into the wise queen we see in the original film. She’s still learning and growing in Mufasa’s presence, so delving deeper into her journey would be fascinating.

You can buy Disney’s The Lion King: Mufasa version digitally from retailers such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home right now.
