The servers for the multiplayer fighting game MultiVersus are now offline. Despite this change, players who logged in between February 4th and May 30th will still have access to play the game.
Back in January, it was initially announced by WB Games that May 30 would mark the end of the MultiVersus server operation. In their announcement, they mentioned that the game’s fifth season would be its last major update.
Besides shutting down the servers, it’s important to note that the game MultiVersus will no longer be available for purchase from platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, and Microsoft Store. Consequently, potential new players won’t be able to buy the game in the future.
Player First Games, along with the Warner Bros Games team, didn’t come to this decision lightly when they announced the shutdown of servers. They poured their heart and soul into creating MultiVersus, building a distinctive social and cooperative experience from scratch that blends numerous popular characters and worlds.
We’re extremely pleased with the game we’ve created, and we can’t thank the MultiVersus community enough for their support during our journey. Your energy and devotion have truly set a new standard.
The servers are being turned off, which happens only a few months following the closure of Player First Games. The studio’s shutdown coincided with the closing down of WB Games San Diego, Monolith, and an unfinished game based on the Wonder Woman series. In a statement announcing the studio closures, the company stated that this move is a strategic shift in direction and not a reflection of the teams or the talents they possess.
As an ardent supporter of MultiVersus, I must admit that its initial launch in 2022’s closed alpha saw a promising start. Yet, the player base dwindled rather swiftly before the alpha was discontinued. Fast forward to May 2024, the game made a grand comeback on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Regrettably, even with this relaunch, MultiVersus failed to recapture the momentum it had initially generated.
It’s been suggested that the poor performance of MultiVersus could have put Warner Bros. Games under financial pressure, causing them to cease development on Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman game. This speculation comes from Jason Schrier at Bloomberg, who also pointed to issues with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in this context.
Last year, Suicide Squad was a massive financial failure, costing the studio around $200 million. Additionally, MultiVersus and Quidditch Champions also failed, resulting in another $100 million loss, according to Schrier. He noted that Warner Bros. Games’ ventures into live-service games have not been successful under the leadership of former head David Haddad.
“Last year, Suicide Squad was a disastrous flop that cost the studio approximately $200 million. Furthermore, MultiVersus and Quidditch Champions were also financial failures, resulting in another $100 million loss. As Schrier pointed out, Warner Bros. Games’ forays into live-service games have not been successful under the leadership of former head David Haddad.”)
After his departure, Haddad was replaced by JB Perrette, who currently holds dual roles as both CEO and President within Warner Bros. Discovery’s international streaming and gaming sector, taking over his previous position.
