MultiVersus Has Underperformed, Contributing to Additional $100 Million Loss for WB Games

As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for crossover fighting games, I must confess that my excitement for MultiVersus was palpable when it first entered open beta. The prospect of pitting Batman against Wonder Woman, or perhaps even Arya Stark against Superman, seemed too good to be true. Alas, the reality of this promising title has fallen far short of my expectations, and the recent financial woes surrounding its developer, WB Games, only serve to underscore the game’s underperformance.

Following a lengthy open beta period and an equally long break, MultiVersus came back this year with its official launch. However, despite being inspired by Super Smash Bros., WB Games’ free-to-play platform fighter hasn’t managed to make the significant commercial splash that they had anticipated.

According to IGN’s report, during a recent financial conference call, it was disclosed that MultiVersus has not only fallen short of expectations but has actually resulted in an additional $100 million loss for WB Games. This loss comes on top of heavy losses the company had previously suffered this year due to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, commented that the games industry is currently falling short of its full potential,” indicates a less formal and more straightforward rephrasing of the original statement.

“CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels stated, ‘We had an additional impairment loss of $100 million this quarter, mainly because of the poor performance of MultiVersus. This adds to the total losses we’ve taken in our game division this year, which now exceeds $300 million. This significant reduction in profits in our studios is largely due to these losses in our games business.’

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that WB Games is focusing their efforts on four beloved franchises: Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Batman, and Game of Thrones. For further insights, check out the details right here.

You can play MultiVersus on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and personal computers. To read our review of the game, click here. Just a few weeks after its release, it was announced in July that the game’s developer, Player First Games, had been bought by WB Games.
