Approximately one year since its launch, Warner Bros.’ “MultiVersus” is officially closing down following the release of Season 5. This free-to-play multiplayer fighting game, modeled after Super Smash Bros., boasting a lineup of characters licensed by Warner Bros., experienced a rocky development phase even before its unveiling in November 2021. Numerous leaks, revealing the complete roster and potential future additions to the game, surfaced during its lifespan. Despite this, the game saw growth after its initial beta for an anticipated release in May 2024. Regrettably, “MultiVersus” failed to maintain its momentum and will halt production later this year.
What a fantastic journey it’s been, folks! I appreciate every bit of your support. If you’d like additional information, feel free to check out our blog post and FAQ page.

According to a blog post by Player First Games, when Season 5 launches on February 4th, MultiVersus will no longer receive updates or support as of its end date on May 30th. This decision means that the game’s online connectivity will be terminated and it will be removed from PlayStation Network, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store. In a Q&A session, Player First Games explained their reasoning for this move.
This significant choice wasn’t made impulsively. The Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our emotions into crafting MultiVersus, a distinct social and cooperative experience that merges popular characters and universes from the very start. We take great pride in the game we’ve developed, and we are deeply grateful for the backing of the passionate and energetic MultiVersus community throughout this creative process. Your dedication and excitement have been truly remarkable.
If you’re a MultiVersus player, you’ll continue to enjoy offline gameplay with your existing content. You can choose between local multiplayer or battles against AI opponents. As of right now, no new purchases can be made with real money. However, any unused Gleamium and Character Tokens can still be used as currency in the store. This change also means that Aquaman and Lola Bunny will be unlocked through gameplay by completing the free Battle Pass.
MultiVersus Is Officially Dead In Less Than A Year
Previously discussed, the last season for the game “MultiVersus” is set to end on May 30th, marking a halt in new updates. Interestingly, this date falls just two days after the game’s first anniversary on May 28th. The game boasted an eclectic and vibrant cast of characters from various Warner Bros. franchises, such as DC (featuring Superman and Batman) and Steven Universe (with Steven and Garnet). This blend of popular entertainment properties definitely contributed to its allure, drawing many to the beta phase and its official launch.
Regrettably, upon the complete launch of MultiVersus, numerous players found it overly commercialized due to an abundance of in-game purchases that required real money. Even with a decent initial player count, Warner Bros., who had purchased Player First Games in June 2024, announced in November that the game fell short of their expectations. Although fans anticipated its popularity to grow over time with characters like Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titan’s Raven added, it wasn’t sufficient to prevent MultiVersus from its unfortunate downward trajectory.
