Muppets Fans Demand a Reboot After Hilarious Super Bowl Ad

Booking.com’s Super Bowl advertisement didn’t air until the final stages of the game, but it soon became a crowd favorite. Starring The Muppets, this ad has sparked a lot of buzz online, with viewers given a sneak peek a week before the Super Bowl and racking up over 88 million views in advance. Now that the ad is out, and it’s quite amusing, it seems that Muppet fans have rediscovered their affection for these small puppet characters and their funny escapades. Led by Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, Gonzo, and Statler & Waldorf, you can watch it below.

One viewer praised the return of the Muppets in a Superbowl ad as a brilliant move, adding that Booking.com provided some amusement. Other users concurred, with one stating that any commercial featuring the Muppets is a success, using the hashtag #SuperBowlLIX.

I’m feeling great because it seems like the Chiefs will lose, and I just came across a Muppets ad.

One worried fan commented that even though the Muppets appeared in a Super Bowl commercial, there’s still no announcement about a new Muppets movie – they wonder what went wrong with our country.

Despite the excitement the commercial generated among many viewers, some fans found themselves disappointed upon recognizing its implications. One viewer, for instance, lamented, “While the Smurfs get another film, the Muppets are confined to ads for Booking.com.

Of late, The Muppets have been mostly confined to a limited number of projects under Disney’s ownership. The deal made by Disney for The Muppet property in 2004 did not encompass other properties like Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock. Since then, Disney has employed the characters sparingly in projects such as “The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz” (2005) TV film, a short-lived self-titled TV series (2015), a streaming TV series titled “The Muppets Mayhem” (2023), and the Halloween special “Muppets Haunted Mansion” (2021).

Under Disney’s management, The Muppets have produced just two new full-length films: “The Muppets” from 2011 and “Muppets Most Wanted” in 2014. The former, starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, was a reboot that seemed to herald a fresh phase for the characters as it raked in over $160 million worldwide, setting a new record for Muppets movies, and took home an Oscar for Best Original Song. “Muppets Most Wanted”, released in 2014, also made over $79 million globally, a notable amount considering the Muppets, but one that barely covered its high production costs.

Currently, it’s undecided where The Muppets are heading next, but their potential appearance in a significant Super Bowl advertisement might just trigger a fresh wave of popularity for the franchise.
