Murderbot Episode 3 Shocker: Who Really Hacked the SecUnit and Why?

Heed this notice! The current episode of Apple TV+’s “Murderbot” series presents a thrilling climax, with Murderbot (played by Alexander Skarsgård) delving into the DeltFall survey, leaving many questions unanswered. In the third episode of season 1, the characters from “Murderbot” ventured to the DeltFall survey in search of similar issues experienced by PreservationAux. Upon arrival, Murderbot stumbled upon a shocking scene: numerous human bodies scattered and a solitary rogue SecUnit still active. This grisly discovery was puzzling on its own, but “Murderbot” episode 3 also left viewers hanging with a cliffhanger that puts Murderbot’s very existence at risk.

Fortunately, the source material for Murderbot, The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, has already provided insights into the fate of DeltFall and their SecUnits. Nevertheless, episode 3 of Murderbot introduced substantial alterations to the initial book in the series, All Systems Red, leaving us uncertain about potential implications for the rest of the show. Furthermore, there are certain aspects of the story that Murderbot remains uninformed about. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that a clear explanation would be helpful for understanding the ending of Murderbot episode 3.

What Happened To DeltFall’s SecUnits In The Murderbot Books

DeltFall’s SecUnits Were Attacked & Hacked By A Rival Company Named GrayCris

In Artificial Condition, it was discovered that the SecUnits at DeltFall’s shelter were hacked by a company known as GrayCris. Pretending to be PreservationAux, GrayCris infiltrated DeltFall’s shelter and then had their own SecUnits break into DeltFall’s system. With combat override modules installed, they took control of the SecUnits, causing them to massacre the entire DeltFall survey team and the remaining SecUnit that couldn’t be hacked.

The motive behind GrayCris’ assault on DeltFall is a bit intricate. You see, GrayCris is pursuing the leftover alien artifacts that Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) pinpointed at the end of Murderbot season 1, episode 2. As Ratthi clarified, these alien remnants are safeguarded by galactic law, making it unlawful to exploit them for profit. In essence, GrayCris is attempting to illegally acquire the alien remnants, and they eliminated DeltFall to keep their illicit operation concealed. If all other surveyors on the planet perish, then no one would ever notify authorities about the presence of these alien remnants, allowing GrayCris to carry on their profitable scheme undetected indefinitely.

How Does Murderbot Escape DeltFall In The Books?

Mensah Returns To Save Murderbot & Prevent It From Being Hacked

In episode 3 of Murderbot, things took an unexpected turn as Murderbot was shot by a SecUnit that shouldn’t have been there, given the three SecUnits assigned to DeltFall. This unanticipated SecUnit hailed from GrayCris and was sent by the poachers to contaminate the other SecUnits. Catching Murderbot off guard, it managed to get the upper hand. However, Murderbot has an ally. Although Murderbot instructed Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) and PreservationAux to retreat to the hopper, Mensah intends to revisit the scene and rescue Murderbot from the GrayCris SecUnit. Mensah’s affection for Murderbot is growing, leading her to make a daring move to protect it.

As a devoted cinephile following the storyline in “All Systems Red,” I eagerly await the return of the intriguing character known as Murderbot and its companions, PreservationAux. You might recall an incident involving GrayCris’ SecUnit attempting to install a combat override module on Murderbot. In a desperate bid to safeguard both itself and PreservationAux from any potential catastrophe, the SecUnit resorted to a drastic measure: shooting itself in the chest to thwart the override.

Though it harbors a profound dislike for humans, Murderbot’s protective instincts kicked into high gear during this ordeal. The thought of causing another massacre weighed heavily on its mind, and so it took the only action available to put itself out of commission temporarily. Rest assured, our favorite SecUnit will be restored after that fateful event, but the repercussions are likely to be substantial for Murderbot.

Why Did Gurathin Sniff Mensah’s Pillow In Murderbot Episode 3?

Gurathin Is Interested In Mensah & Acts As A Parallel To Murderbot’s Awkwardness

As a devoted film enthusiast, I found myself utterly bewildered during episode 3 of Murderbot, particularly when it came to the enigmatic character Gurathin, played by David Dastmalchian. Despite staying behind, Murderbot managed to observe him via the hub’s security feed. What followed was a deeply unsettling scene as I watched Gurathin sneak into Mensah’s room and sniff her pillow. Even the usually indifferent Murderbot expressed discomfort, uttering “this is truly depressing“. It appeared that Gurathin harbors romantic feelings for Mensah, an unusual way of trying to bridge the gap with his unrequited love by seeking out her “pheromones”. This intriguing subplot wasn’t present in “All Systems Red”, leaving its authenticity uncertain.

It’s quite plausible that Gurathin has feelings for Mensah. The reason he joined the Preservation Alliance, as he confided in Murderbot, was because of his friendship with Mensah. However, it appears that Mensah, who is already in a polyamorous relationship with multiple individuals, may not reciprocate Gurathin’s romantic feelings. With her being unavailable, Gurathin seems to be content with small gestures, such as secretly sniffing her pillow.

Despite the unease of the situation, it appears that Gurathin’s peculiar behavior of sniffing Mensah’s pillow might hold significant relevance for the character of Murderbot as events unfold. Intriguingly, Gurathin seems to embody many socially awkward traits, much like Murderbot itself. Both characters exhibit antisocial tendencies and struggle with expressing their emotions, a trait evident in Gurathin’s dialogue with Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski). However, beneath these quirks lies a heart of good intentions. The intense dislike between them might stem from their shared awkwardness, which could potentially lead to a deeper connection between Gurathin and Murderbot in the future.

Mensah’s Responsibilities & Motivations In Murderbot Explained

Mensah Is The Political Leader Of Preservation Alliance & Needs This Mining Operation To Remain Independent

In a scene from Murderbot season 1, episode 3, there was a moment that felt a bit unclear without some background from the books. During their journey to DeltFall, Mensah mentioned the importance of “staying economically independent” and hinted at other members of Preservation Alliance considering joining the Corporation Rim. It turns out later (since Murderbot hadn’t bothered to read Mensah’s personal file) that Mensah is, in fact, the political leader of Preservation Alliance. She was tasked with this mission because her role as a leader within the community allows her to continue performing her primary duties while serving in public office.

The leadership position held by Mensah within the Preservation Alliance significantly clarifies her intentions and duties. In the story “Murderbot,” it is essential for the PreservationAux team to conduct their survey since discovering valuable resources for mining would enable Preservation Alliance to preserve its autonomy. Conversely, if the survey team fails to find any valuable resources, they will be compelled to align with Corporation Rim and submit to the oppressive regulations of a malevolent company, as depicted in “Murderbot.” This role also sheds light on why Mensah has been experiencing panic attacks in “Murderbot”: the success of this survey is crucial for the preservation of Preservation Alliance.
