Details about Laken Riley‘s final moments are being revealed.
9 months following her death during an early morning run, authorities disclosed the last text message that 22-year-old Allyson Phillips sent to her mother prior to departing for her exercise routine at the University of Georgia’s intramural fields.
The investigator, as reported by 11 Alive from the Nov. 19 trial, sent a message saying, “I’m about to go for a jog. Are you available to chat?” This paraphrase aims to convey the original meaning in a more casual and conversational tone.
Apart from this method, Riley additionally made attempts to reach Phillips. Within just a few minutes, she also phoned her mother, and soon afterwards dialed 911; however, that call didn’t last long, as indicated by the timeline presented by prosecutors in court, according to their account.
Eventually, she failed to answer her daughter’s phone call, yet she made an effort to reach out again after twenty minutes and fired off a series of concerned text messages.
“Your silence while you’re out jogging is making me anxious. Could you please confirm that everything is alright with you?” In another text, she expressed her concern by saying, “Could you give me a call? I’m really worried about your wellbeing.” (According to CBS News)
At that point, prosecutors claimed that Riley had previously come across suspect Jose Ibarra – a 26-year-old individual from Venezuela who illegally entered the U.S. in 2022 – on a forest path. They stated that she passed away around 9:28 a.m. after an altercation, according to them.
She was reported missing by a friend after failing to return home from exercising.
TopMob News reached out to prosecutors and Ibarra’s lawyer for comment but has not heard back.
On February 22, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Lucas Breyer testified in court that when Riley’s body was discovered in the woods, her clothing appeared to have undergone significant alteration. Specifically, the waistband of her running tights seemed to have been partially pulled down, and her jacket, shirt, and sports bra were all drawn upwards. (According to CBS News.)
In that very same month, Ibarra, whose genetic material was found at the crime scene, was indicted for murder, kidnapping, assault, and obstructing a 911 call. He has maintained his innocence by pleading not guilty to all charges and is currently going through a trial, though he has chosen not to speak in defense of himself during the proceedings.
After the demise of Riley, FBI Director Christopher Wray extended his sympathies to her family and the university community in Georgia.
Wray expressed his deep sorrow during a March 19 press conference, as reported by CBS News, stating not only for the family, friends, classmates, and staff mourning Laken’s death but also because he was disheartened to witness the tranquility Laken’s murder had destroyed.
