Murderer's Ex-Wife Breaks Cold Case Open After 35 Years in New Doc

As a dedicated true crime enthusiast who has spent countless sleepless nights poring over cold cases and investigating the darkest corners of human nature, I must say that the story of Angela Hicks and Jonelle Matthews is one that truly resonates with me.

The newest true crime special from Oxygen delves into a murder mystery that remained unsolved for more than three decades.

Back in 1984, I was only twelve, much like Jonelle Matthews, who mysteriously vanished from her residence in Greeley, Colorado. Even a widespread initiative, one of the earliest nationwide missing child campaigns on milk cartons, failed to unearth any leads about her whereabouts.

After two decades had passed, Angela Hicks found herself feeling helpless, as she confessed in an exclusive preview for TopMob News’ special on The Girl on the Milk Carton. “I made attempts to act and those efforts failed. It was mostly waiting and enduring all those years.”

Previously, Angela had harbored suspicions that her ex-husband, Steve Pankely – a true-crime aficionado and former Idaho gubernatorial candidate – might have played a role in her disappearance. However, Angela’s attempts to seek justice were fruitless for 35 years. This changed when Jonelle’s remains were unearthed in 2019, which was only 20 miles from her home.

That’s when Angela got a call from Robert Cash, who reopened the tragic cold case.

In the sneak peek, Robert explains to Angeles over the phone, “I’m a detective at GPD, working on a case here. It’s an old, cold one – it dates back to 1984, and it pertains to the disappearance of Jonelle Matthews.”

It’s not surprising that Angela is greatly surprised upon learning that Jonelle’s alleged murderer could potentially face punishment for his wrongdoings.

After all this time, can you believe it? she expresses in a private moment. “This is the longest stretch I’ve ever endured waiting for a call-back.”

During their ongoing conversation, Robert inquired, “I believe you were once married to Steve Pankey, am I correct?” To which Angela responded affirmatively, “Yes, that’s accurate. We were married for approximately 23 and a half years, and we’ve been divorced for about 17 and a half years.”

In the end, Angela disclosed the decisive proof that eventually resulted in Steve’s 2022 imprisonment for kidnapping and murdering Jonelle. At present, he is serving a life sentence with the potential for parole. However, it’s important to note that throughout the trial, Steve continued to assert his innocence.

Delve into Angela’s lengthy quest for justice as “The Girl on the Milk Carton” is broadcasted this coming Sunday, August 25, at 7 PM on Oxygen.
