As a lifelong connoisseur of cinematic masterpieces, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming documentary, “Music By John Williams.” Growing up in a world devoid of Netflix and streaming services, I eagerly awaited the arrival of each new VHS tape from across the pond, often finding myself enthralled by the magic woven into every scene by none other than Mr. Williams himself.
A documentary titled “Music By John Williams,” produced by Steven Spielberg and focusing on the life and career of the renowned composer responsible for the music of “Jaws” and “Star Wars,” is set to premiere in November, following a brief theatrical release. This film will kick off the AFI Fest 2024, happening at the TCL Chinese Theatre from October 23rd to the 27th. Subsequently, on November 1st, the movie will be available for streaming on Disney+. One of the film’s producers is Ron Howard, a top executive at Imagine Entertainment who also directed the recent Disney+ documentary titled “Jim Henson: Idea Man.”
Over the course of his illustrious career, John Williams has been nominated for an impressive 52 Academy Awards and has taken home five statuettes for “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Jaws,” “Star Wars,” “E.T.,” and “Schindler’s List.” He is also renowned for composing the scores for “Superman,” “Indiana Jones,” “Jurassic Park,” and numerous other films. Initially, he expressed his intention to retire after working on “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” but subsequently reconsidered this decision.
According to Deadline’s initial report, AFI’s President and CEO, Bob Gazzale, stated that John Williams is an enduring American figure with a profound and eternal worldwide influence. He added that they are incredibly excited, almost ecstatic, to host the world premiere of the film, but their enthusiasm would not reach such heights without the music from “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.”
Raised in France, Laurent Bouzereau found that I would obtain vinyl soundtracks before many American films were even released stateside. This delay gave me a unique opportunity to appreciate John Williams’ compositions firsthand. His scores stirred within me a deep affection for music and demonstrated the profound impact a score can have on a film’s narrative. It was essential to share this tale, not just because it focuses on one of the most exceptional composers ever, but also due to its underlying message about preserving orchestral music and the artists who create it.
The movie features a variety of interviews with individuals such as Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Kate Capshaw, Gustavo Dudamel, J.J. Abrams, Chris Martin, Ron Howard, Chris Columbus, George Lucas, Itzhak Perlman, Lawrence Kasdan, Yo-Yo Ma, Ke Huy Quan, James Mangold, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Seth MacFarlane, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Branford Marsalis.
