‘My Butt Got Huge.’ Sydney Sweeney Had Major Gains To Play ’90s Fighter Christy Martin, And It Sounds Like She Loved It

Although Sydney Sweeney has been making headlines (and perhaps some NSFW mental images) due to her bathwater soap sale, I’m more eager to watch her deliver powerful punches against rival boxers in the upcoming 2025 movie based on boxing legend Christy Martin. This role seems to be the most physically demanding yet for the busy actress, and she shared insights about the significant progress she made from securing the role in early 2024 up until filming wrapped in November.

Discussing with W about the significant advancements in her career over the past three years since the last airing of her HBO hit series “Euphoria” – although Season 3 won’t be released until 2026, Sweeney discussed preparing for filming by adopting a particular training regimen and how she relished that shift in pace. In her own words:

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Joining the cast, I prepared to portray Christy over approximately three and a half months through rigorous training. My days were filled with eating and working out – mornings spent on weight training for an hour, followed by nearly two hours of kickboxing in the afternoon, and wrapping up my evenings with another hour of weight training.

It’s generally accepted among fans that Sydney Sweeney’s physical build in shows like “The White Lotus” and “Immaculate” isn’t particularly imposing, not in a threatening way that would strike fear into trained fighters. However, it seems she relished the process of building muscle, adding approximately 30 pounds during training. This increase in weight didn’t just make her stronger but also gave her a more voluptuous figure, with an emphasis on her chest and derriere. As she herself put it:

My physical form underwent a significant transformation. None of my previous clothes fit me. Instead, I found myself in a size 27 for jeans, which is quite unusual for me as I’m typically a size 23. Also, my bust and posterior expanded noticeably. It was truly astonishing! I exclaimed, “Oh my goodness!” Yet, it was an incredible experience: I felt incredibly robust, almost superhumanly strong.

As of now, no trailers have been unveiled for the upcoming boxing biopic, whose title is yet to be finalized. The only sneak peek we’ve gotten so far is a glimpse of Sweeney’s muscular arms. Thus, it remains uncertain when viewers will initially witness her engaging in intense boxing matches alongside other fighters, portraying Martin’s extraordinary journey towards becoming the most productive and renowned female boxer ever, as well as the first to be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.

Avoid fixating on Sweeney’s chest or rear in the trailer, as she might be quick to knock you out if you do so.

The Biopic’s Director On Sydney Sweeney’s Dedication To The Role

Film Director David Michôd, renowned for his works like “Animal Kingdom” (2010) and “The Rover” (2014), expressed admiration for Christy Martin’s remarkable career and praised Sydney Sweeney’s consistent optimism during the filming process, overcoming every obstacle that arose. In his own words:

Martin made a significant impact in the world of women’s boxing during the mid-’90s. She was the pioneer as the first female fighter featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and fought alongside Mike Tyson. Her spouse trained her, but after her success, he attempted to harm her. Our movie combines an uplifting tale of a determined underdog in the sports world with a personal narrative. Sydney prepared diligently for her role, always arriving at work with enthusiasm and eagerness. Remarkably, Sydney was like a beacon of sunshine, maintaining an upbeat demeanor even during challenging times.

It’s equally astounding that Sweeney managed to lose the necessary weight within just seven weeks, following the completion of the Christy Martin biopic, as it was for her to achieve all those gains to play the role in the first place. Quite a challenge, if you ask me!

David Michod recently found it surprising when he spoke with Sweeney over FaceTime, as he discovered that she was inside the makeup truck for ‘Euphoria’, expressing astonishment since she had transitioned from her ‘Martin’ appearance to a “glamorous” look for the HBO series.

Sydney Sweeney’s absence from both the big and small screens will be brief in the near future. Her next appearance is on June 13 with Apple TV+’s suspenseful drama titled “Echo Valley”, followed by a Christmas Day release for Paul Feig’s adaptation of “The Housemaid”. Additionally, t”, the movie version of “Barbarella”, an adaptation of a video game for “Split Fiction”, and many more projects to look forward to.
