An alternative to the Windows File Explorer, known as Files, has been updated with refinements and additional customization features. This upgrade takes the app to version 3.9.7 and can be downloaded immediately.
This update may not be as significant compared to some of the more recent ones, but it certainly offers some attractive new features. Specifically, the File function now allows for customization in terms of how file size units are presented onscreen.
Additionally, files now automatically detect their encoding during the extraction process of ZIP archives, making this feature quite convenient.
You can read about all the changes and fixes in the Files v3.9.7 release notes.
Files App: What’s New
Refreshed Release Notes experience
Instead of displaying the Release Notes in a separate dialog, we’ve integrated them into a specific tab that pops up automatically once you update your files. This streamlined approach allows for an effortless exploration of the new features and enhancements included in each version update.
Placeholder content for an empty sidebar
When the sidebars are collapsed or minimized, default content appears instead to enhance user-friendliness and offer useful explanations.
Settings context menu
Clicking on the settings button now reveals a dropdown menu that allows you to access the settings JSON file immediately.
Customizable size formats
Now, you have the ability to personalize how file sizes appear. This adjustable option can be found in the Settings for Files & Folders, empowering you to have a greater say in how data is shown to you.
Automatic encoding detection for ZIP files
We now automatically identify the encoding when unzipping files. However, if necessary, you have the option to manually set the encoding in the “Extract Archive” dialog.
UTF-8 encoding for ZIP creation
In the process of making ZIP files, Files now automatically adopts UTF-8 encoding, enhancing its cross-system compatibility.
Favorite File Explorer alternative
For quite some time, I’ve kept tabs on the evolution of the Files app, regularly engaging in discussions with its creator. What truly captivates me about this app is that it frequently introduces features ahead of the standard File Explorer on Windows 11.
External software creators such as Yair, who developed Files, demonstrate an ideal representation of contemporary Windows user experiences. Unlike Microsoft, they tend to be more eager to experiment beyond established boundaries.
File Explorer, being an established tool, has made Microsoft cautious about implementing drastic modifications. For instance, the ‘Files’ application introduced tabs well before File Explorer did.
The files offer distinctive characteristics that make them different from the File Explorer, including multiple viewing options, sorting capabilities, and tagging features.
