My favorite soulslite just reached an impressive milestone — You should play this satisfying game if you haven't already

What you need to know

  • Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a “soulslite” developed by A44 Games and published by Kepler Interactive that released on July 18, 2024.
  • The AA adventure has recently reached an impressive milestone of over 500,000 players since its launch.
  • In our own review, we scored the game highly, specifically pointing out its satisfying combat and interesting world.
  • It’s a far more approachable game within the soulslike genre thanks to the ability to change difficulties at basically any time.
  • You can play Flintlock on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Game Pass, and PlayStation 5.

As a seasoned tech enthusiast and avid gamer who has dabbled in the soulslike genre since its inception, I must say that Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has undeniably left an indelible mark on my gaming experience. Having spent countless hours navigating the treacherous landscapes of FromSoftware’s masterpieces, I can confidently attest to the allure and challenge these games possess. Yet, it wasn’t until Flintlock graced our screens in 2024 that I found a title that truly struck the perfect balance between accessibility and challenge.

2022 saw an unprecedented surge in popularity for Soulslike games following Elden Ring’s triumphant debut. FromSoftware’s action RPG and its expansive Shadow of the Erdtree DLC drew a multitude of newcomers to the genre, yet many players found these games too punishing for their liking despite the allure of the challenging gameplay. To cater to this group, A44 Games in collaboration with Kepler Interactive introduced Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn on July 18, 2024, offering a more accessible take on the Soulslike genre.

1. The creator labels their game as a “spiritual successor” or “spin-off,” which means it’s a somewhat friendlier take on the adventure genre. Notably, this game has achieved an impressive feat, surpassing half a million players since its debut.

A more approachable soulslike

I must admit, I wasn’t taken aback in the slightest by the game’s triumph – even though it might appear unimpressive compared to AAA titles. Nevertheless, considering that this is categorized as a AA game, surpassing half a million players is a noteworthy accomplishment.

1. Why should I be amazed by the game’s triumph? In my evaluation of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, I emphasized its enjoyable gameplay. Although it may not rank as the greatest game ever created, I must admit that Flintlock stands out as my preferred souls-like title. Its engaging combat mechanics, bolstered by a rewarding risk-to-reward system, captivating environment that invites exploration, and intriguing narrative all contribute to keeping players hooked. In fact, I frequently found myself eagerly tackling enemies in search of additional Reputation (experience points). The thrill of successfully pulling off these combats was rewarding and motivated me to repeat the action. Not to mention, the abundance of valuable items scattered throughout the world adds an element of fun exploration and discovery.

Flintlock is more accessible for a larger number of players due to its adjustable difficulty settings. Unlike other soulslikes, this game lets you switch between Easy (Story), Normal, and Hard (Possessed) modes whenever you find the challenge insufficient or too daunting. This way, more individuals can relish the experience according to their abilities. On the contrary, most soulslikes by FromSoftware, as well as the genre in general, offer a sole difficulty level that is notoriously demanding.

In addition, Flintlock allows you to hit the pause button at any moment. If someone requires your attention at home, you’re not forced to juggle between them and your gameplay. Perhaps someone is bringing a package to your doorstep? Simply press pause and attend to it. Although this feature may appear insignificant given that many games offer similar functionality, it’s uncommon in FromSoftware titles. The disadvantage lies in its frequent inconvenience.

Although Flintlock has its share of cliched dialogues and questionable character relationships, the game as a whole is worth playing. The engaging gameplay makes up for these shortcomings and is likely to be enjoyed by many.

As an analyst, I can’t help but strongly encourage you not to miss out on the captivating world of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn. This game is currently accessible on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. For those with Xbox Game Pass, your membership offers a unique opportunity to delve into this soulslite experience. Don’t let it pass you by!
