As a seasoned Monster Hunter enthusiast who has spent countless hours hunting beasts both great and small across various dimensions, I must say that the latest weapon overview trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds has me positively giddy with excitement. The new moves for the Gunlance have taken this weapon to an explosive level that even my trusty old Great Sword would envy.
Capcom, the makers behind the eagerly awaited action-hunting game Monster Hunter Wilds, have unveiled the newest installment in their series of weapon overview trailers. In this video, they highlight one of my favorite weapon categories from the Monster Hunter games, the Gunlance. This formidable type of weapon is engineered to pulverize enemies with powerful thrusts from its long lance and subsequently obliterate them with up-close detonations from the built-in cannon’s shelling explosions.
The unique feature of Gunlance shelling attacks lies in their ability to surpass a monster’s defensive hide, ensuring consistent damage to the enemy. Additionally, these attacks can be amplified by charging them up for increased potency and the potential to stun monsters, causing them to fall. Consequently, Gunlances are an excellent weapon choice when tackling heavily armored beasts that other melee weapons like Great Swords and Insect Glaives struggle to penetrate.
Furthermore, every Gunlance comes equipped with one of three distinct Shelling variations, which significantly influence how you play it.
- Normal-Shelling Type: Equips the Gunlance with five shells so it has more ammo to fire multiple shots in a row and synergizes with the weapon’s Full-Burst attack, which unloads all shells simultaneously for massive burst damage.
- Long-Shelling Type: Equips the Gunlance with three shells and increases the blast range and radius of the Charged-Shelling shots.
- Wide-Shelling Type: Equips the Gunlance with two shells but its regular Shelling shots have the highest damage output compared to Normal and Long Gunlances. Wide Gunlances are best suited for mixing Shelling attacks with melee attack combos.
One notable feature of the Gunlance is its collection of destructive attacks, such as the Wyrmstake Cannon, which launches a rocket-driven spike that burrows into monsters before detonating, and the Wyvern’s Fire, an immense explosion so potent it pushes both the user and the targeted monster backwards because of the tremendous impact of the blast.
The Gunlance features a large protective shield designed to deflect even the most powerful monster attacks, ensuring players can endure battles more effectively. This is particularly useful since one of the Gunlance’s drawbacks lies in its heavy weight, making movement slower. However, advancements made in Monster Hunter Wilds may alleviate this mobility concern, as upgrades have been implemented to improve speed without compromising the new combustive attacks players can use to lay waste to monsters.
These new gameplay additions include but are not limited to:
- Blocking attacks at the right time with the shield will reduce knockback and allow players to immediately activate the Full-Burst attack.
- Quick side-step dodges while firing shells so you can evade incoming attacks while damaging enemies at the same time.
- The Gunlance now has new Flamethrower attacks that lead into the Wyrmstake Cannon attack.
- Charged-Shelling shots can now be powered up so much that the recoil will send the player character flying backwards but the trade-off is that you will deal even more damage.
- New combo attacks that allow you to fire a Wyrmstake Cannon, activate the flamethrower, and then reload the Gunlance’s ammo to fire a second Wyrmstake Cannon immediately afterwards.
- The new Focus Strike will turn the Gunlance into a drill that digs into a monster’s weak spots and wounds.
- A new move where you shove the Gunlance into a monster’s to fire a Charged-Shelling shot inside their skull.
The amount of new tools Gunlance has in Monster Hunter Wilds blows my mind
Among the weapon overviews trailers for Monster Hunter Wilds that have been released so far, this particular one is my top pick. The Gunlance appears to be significantly more aggressive, agile, and explosive compared to its portrayal in previous games, and the new moves are simply awe-inspiring to watch.
Essentially, they drew inspiration from how the Gunlance was used in Monster Hunter Frontier (a Japanese MMO version of Monster Hunter that ran from 2010 to 2019), and incorporated some of those mechanics into the Gunlance in Monster Hunter World. This was done to address its mobility problems and broaden its move-set, adding a wider range of explosive abilities to make it more enjoyable than ever.
2025 can’t arrive quickly enough for me, as I’m eager to dive into the forthcoming PC game right away, grasp the advanced Gunlace, and pulverize monsters using these fantastic new maneuvers.
