As a hardcore fan of manga and anime, I’ve been following “My Hero Academia” since its early days, and I must admit, the upcoming final chapter has left me both excited and nostalgic. In a recent interview with Viz Media, creator Kohei Horikoshi shared some fascinating insights into the inspiration behind his iconic characters and their names.
As a longtime fan of manga and comic books, I can’t help but be thrilled and nostalgic as I write this. Having grown up reading American superhero comics from Marvel and DC, I’ve always been drawn to the larger-than-life characters and their captivating stories. So it comes as no surprise that Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of “My Hero Academia,” shares my passion.
My Hero Academia’s superhero realm boasts an impressive roster of heroes and villains, matching Marvel and DC’s offerings. Previously, Horikoshi permitted a collaboration between one of his characters and Deadpool from Marvel. In the comic “Deadpool: Samurai,” Wade Wilson unites with All Might to confront Thanos, the Mad Titan. Although Class 1-A hasn’t met the Avengers or X-Men yet, the possibility of the universes merging remains.
My Hero Academia x Marvel & DC
In a conversation with Viz Media, Kohei Horikoshi admitted that North American comic books left a superficial impact on his work. Specifically, he made a deliberate effort to choose hero names that sound suitable for American comics.
Horikoshi explained his approach to naming heroes and villains in a more conversational way: “I didn’t put too much thought into it at the time. I mostly selected names based on how they sounded. I aimed for catchy and memorable titles that seemed fitting for the character’s appearance. However, it has been a while since we introduced new characters – perhaps the last one was Star and Stripe. To be honest, I don’t remember much about coming up with their names.”
