My Hero Academia: Would Mirio Have Been a Better One For All Holder?

As a long-time fan of My Hero Academia, I must admit that I often ponder what could have been if Mirio Togata had been the one to inherit One For All instead of Izuku Midoriya. With his natural talent and charisma, Mirio would have undoubtedly made a formidable hero, but at the same time, I can’t help but feel that Deku’s journey was just as inspiring, if not more so.

In the popular manga series “My Hero Academia”, we followed Izuku Midoriya as he harnessed the power of One For All to battle some of history’s most formidable villains. However, one question that remains unanswered from the story is whether Mirio Togata would have been a more suitable wielder of this extraordinary ability. The manga run of “My Hero Academia” by Kohei Horikoshi concluded in Shueisha’s “Weekly Shonen Jump” magazine, marking the end of Izuku’s journey after a decade of serialization. Fans watched as Deku’s tale unfolded, encompassing all he had experienced throughout its run.

In “My Hero Academia”, Deku consistently faced a variety of obstacles, striving to surpass his own capabilities with One For All, despite his body initially rejecting it. At one point in his story, there was an ambiguous phase regarding the use of his power, specifically when he first encountered Mirio, U.A. Academy’s top student who worked under All Might’s former partner, Sir Nighteye. It turned out that Mirio had originally been intended to inherit the power.

How Mirio Could Have Ended Up With One For All

As Deku prepared for his internship with a pro hero prior to the Shie Hassaikai arc, he uncovered an intriguing truth: Mirio was initially chosen by All Might as the recipient of the One For All quirk. This decision was largely based on Mirio’s exceptional performance at school and his strong resemblance to All Might himself. Given Mirio’s dedication to bringing joy to people, Deku found him an ideal candidate for the task.

Meeting Mirio also triggered doubts in Deku about whether he was truly worthy to wield the power of One For All. It was an impromptu choice by All Might that resulted in Deku obtaining the ability instead, and ever since then, he’s been struggling to adapt his body to the surging power. Despite the fact that things turned out well for him in the end because he didn’t possess any inherent quirk to counteract the accumulated power within One For All, things could have easily taken a different course.

What If Mirio Got One For All Instead?

In an alternate scenario, if All Might had chosen Mirio instead of Deku to inherit One For All, the narrative of “My Hero Academia” would unfold in a completely different way. Unlike Deku who started from scratch, Mirio wouldn’t need to build his abilities from the ground up. Consequently, battles might take on a new dimension and the overall storyline would undergo significant changes. It’s as if a simple decision like this creates an entirely new universe, much like the concept of sliding doors in films or literature.

In the series, characters like Bakugo, Uraraka, and others would no longer be central figures as they join Class 1-A and continue with their lives. Instead, the narrative would primarily revolve around Mirio and the Big 3. This change would significantly alter the course of events, as Shigaraki and All For One likely wouldn’t have targeted Class 1-A with Nomu in Mirio’s absence. The Shie Hassaikai arc could have unfolded quite differently if Mirio had access to One For All’s boost during that time. Additionally, considering the influence of One For All on Mirio personally, the story would take a different direction altogether.

Would Mirio Have Used One For All Better?

If Mirio had received One For All’s power instead of Deku, he wouldn’t have needed to spend as much time adapting his body to having a quirk, as Deku did. This would allow him to start training with One For All much sooner and likely reach higher levels of control and use of its boosting power more quickly. At the time, Deku didn’t have a quirk, making him an ideal host for the ability. If Mirio had lost his power during the Shie Hassaikai arc in the same way he did in My Hero Academia, he would have been in the same position as Deku to be a perfect host. However, since the circumstances are different, Mirio’s version of One For All would still function effectively.

In the course of My Hero Academia, it was found later on that each of the previous wielders had lesser quirks compared to what fans might have expected, not possessing abilities as game-changing as initially thought. All Might stood out as the strongest user up until then due to his exceptional control over the collective power, but Mirio’s variant would have surpassed this, owing to its potential influence on his own quirk. Enhancing this ability would have significantly improved his combat skills as well.

In the present form, Mirio can pass through adversaries and attack with assistance from others, but his individual influence isn’t particularly strong. Obtaining One For All would amplify this power significantly, and potentially grant him access to additional abilities like Deku did. However, it’s fortunate that Deku received One For All instead.

In essence, Mirio might have been a superior user of the One For All quirk due to his experience, but Deku proved to be more influential because he embodied the spirit of an underdog. His battles ignited inspiration in everyone he met. While Mirio could make people smile, Deku touched their hearts on a deeper level. It was witnessing his struggle that stirred everyone into action, whereas Mirio did not carry the same profound impact.
