As a die-hard wrestling fan and avid moviegoer, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I watched Dave Bautista’s new action-comedy “My Spy The Eternal City” on Prime Video. Not only did this film deliver on the laughs and thrilling action sequences we’ve come to expect from Bautista, but it also brought a nostalgic twist with the inclusion of some classic wrestling moves.
Fans of wrestling who watch “My Spy: The Eternal City,” the follow-up to “My Spy” starring former WWE champion Dave Bautista on Prime Video, might recognize some familiar moves in the film’s action scenes. In this sequel, Bautista uses his old finishing move, the Batista Bomb, and his young co-star, Sophie (Chloe Coleman), performs a Hurricanrana. Directed by Pete Segal, who has previous experience filming wrestling sequences from his work on the Starz wrestling series “Heels,” Segal shares that he utilized this background while trying to even out the fighting ground between the young female lead and her older adversaries.
“I attempted a Hurricanrana move in high heels and wondered how this small 14-year-old girl, despite her size, could take down these larger opponents of mine. I considered using a Hurricanrana as a possible solution, knowing it might be the right time for that.” (Segal shares.)
Dave Bautista uses the Batista Bomb in My Spy the Eternal City
As for the Batista Bomb, that one’s simple. How do you get Dave Bautista in an action movie directed by someone with experience filming wrestling and not have him use the maneuver most associated with his wrestling persona?
Segal adds, “We needed to find a spot in the film for Dave’s iconic maneuver.”
In a separate interview, Bautista shared with ComicBook the origin of the Batista Bomb scene and his plans to subtly include it in future films.
As a dedicated gamer, I couldn’t help but feel a strong urge to include a particular element in our ongoing fight scene. We were brainstorming ideas and suddenly it hit me – “Wow, this could be so cool!” It has since become an unquenchable desire of mine to incorporate it into every movie project, much like hidden treasures in games for devoted fans to discover. I’m not quite sure why, but I can’t help feeling that if I manage to add it to all my films, it will be a small tribute to my career and a wink to the audience who have supported me throughout.
What is My Spy the Eternal City about?
In “My Spy: The Eternal City,” CIA agent JJ (Bautista) meets up with Sophie (Coleman), the girl he previously watched over in the first film. Based on the movie’s synopsis, they join forces once more to thwart a dangerous nuclear plan targeting the Vatican during a high school choir tour in Italy.
I had the privilege of being the one in charge of bringing “My Spy: The Eternal City” to life from a screenplay I co-wrote with Jon and Eric Hoeber. This project was extra special for me because I got to work with some familiar faces like Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong, as well as welcome new talents Flula Borg, Craig Robinson, and Anna Faris to the team. Now, if you’re up for an exciting adventure, you can stream “My Spy: The Eternal City” right here on Prime Video.
