Authorities are still putting together the pieces of Sudiksha Konanki’s story.
Following the vanishing of a University of Pittsburgh student during her spring break vacation in the Dominican Republic, authorities there have reportedly questioned a man regarding her disappearance, as per the Dominican Republic National Police.
On March 6, approximately at 4:15 a.m., an unidentified young man was present at the beach with Konanki, who is an Indian citizen residing in Virginia along with her family. This was around the time Konanki disappeared. According to NBC News reports, they had been seen on CCTV entering the beach area of the RIU hotel in Punta Cana earlier that night, alongside five other friends. However, it was noted that Konanki’s five companions returned to the hotel around 5:55 a.m., but the young man was not among them.
According to a statement released by the police on March 9 (originally in Spanish), it’s been stated that during their investigation, they interviewed the young man who entered the beach waters. As part of their ongoing investigation, they are now verifying the initial account he provided.
The statement further highlights that the Public Prosecutor’s Office, DICRIM, and Politur are questioning various individuals, primarily associates of the missing woman, in order to precisely identify the marine search area and its vicinity.

According to three investigative officials from the Dominican Republic, they suspect Konanki, whose body is yet to be found, may have drowned. However, authorities in Loudoun County, Virginia, where her family resides, are keeping all possibilities open and are currently examining every angle.
Initially, it was thought that this situation might be as such, but since last Friday, other scenarios have been investigated. Thomas Julia, the Loudoun County Public Information Officer, stated via text on March 9th, emphasizing that they feel a responsibility to consider every possibility, interview all relevant parties, and examine any phones that could yield valuable information – which is exactly what they’re doing.
Currently, it spans from an unintended incident to a deliberate action, he noted. At present, every possibility is being examined. No option has been dismissed as impossible yet.
Despite their original plan to return to the U.S., the five companions of the junior, who were traveling with him, opted to stay and assist in the ongoing search for Konanki instead, as confirmed by a representative from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
In response to NBC News, RIU Hotels expressed their deep concern over the vanishing of one of their guests.

On March 6, it was reported that Konanki went missing. This occurred after her friends had completed their morning walk on the beach, but she did not return with them. It is thought that she vanished somewhere between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. that day.
After her disappearance, local authorities launched an investigation. The civil defense authorities reportedly initiated searches on both land and sea, while a representative from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia (where Konanki was originally from) informed NBC News that investigative measures included gathering video footage, examining cellphone evidence, and interviewing individuals who were with Konanki.
On March 9, officials told ABC News they believe Konanki died by drowning.
As per a police report, as reported by ABC News, throughout their beach walk, a majority of the group chose to return to their hotel at various points during the night, leaving one friend with Konanki. It appears that this duo then decided to take a swim, and according to the police report, they were swept away by a powerful wave.
According to reports, the friends who were with Konanki have allegedly been interrogated by law enforcement authorities, but no charges have been brought against them as of yet.
After Konanki went missing, her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, shared with CNN that she was on a journey prior to starting her pre-medical studies.
He remarked that his daughter is a charming young lady. She’s quite driven, with aspirations to build a career in the medical field.
